About Benjamin Hough

Benjamin and Ruth Hough/Huff/Hoff of Bent Mountain, Virginia

Benjamin Hough was born December 28, 1718 and married Ruth (?) born May 4, 1723.The diary of a grandchild, Jonas Durman Wilson, is the only known source for the birth dates. Benjamin and Ruth had eight children.

The earliest known records of Benjamin Hoff or Hough or Huff appear in Loudoun County in northern Virginia in the 1760s along with families related by marriage, Wilson and Reed. All of these families relocated to Bent Mountain in southwestern Virginia (near present day Roanoke, Virginia) in the early 1770s and were there during the Revolutionary War. The families remained at Bent Mountain until after the death of Benjamin in 1791 and the eldest son, John, in 1795.There was a split among the family after 1800 with Joseph Huff going to Kanawha County (near present day Charleston, West Virginia) and the other siblings migrating west into Kentucky and Tennessee.

There are two primary theories (and a lot of other speculation) about the ancestry of Benjamin. One theory is that he is the son of Jonathan and Abigail Hough of Wallingford, Connecticut. This Benjamin married Ruth Brownson or Bronson on August 22, 1738.They had a son Noah born February 5, 1739 and died February 9, 1739 in New Milford, Connecticut. By the diary birth dates, Benjamin would have been 20 and Ruth 15 when they married. Benjamin survived until 1791, age 73, and Ruth survived until sometime after 1800, at least age 77 given the diary birth date. So it seems reasonable that Ruth was a few years younger than Benjamin. All this would be a highly probable ancestry except that Orcutt, History of New Milford and Bridgewater, CT. lists the birth date of Ruth Brownson as December 25, 1710.This would have made Ruth age 56 when the last child of Benjamin and Ruth (Jerusha) was born in 1766. It would also make the widow Ruth at least 90 years old when she moved with part of the family, sometime after 1800, from Bent Mountain to Claiborne Co., TN where it is believed that Ruth died. By the 1723 diary birth date, Ruth would have been age 43 when the last child, Jerusha, was born. So if the 1710 birth date is proven to be correct (and to my knowledge it has not been so proven), then it makes Ruth Brownson highly unlikely as the spouse of Benjamin Hough of Bent Mountain.

The other theory about the ancestry of Benjamin is that he is the son of Dirk Pauluszen Hoff and Sarah Yeats of Flushing, NY and Laurenceville, NJ. Benjamin was mentioned as an heir in Dirk Pauluszen Hoff's 1722 will in Hunterdon Co., NJ. These Hoffs were of Dutch ancestry and seem unlikely as the parents of Benjamin for the following reasons: (1) There is absolutely no family history among any of the descendants of Benjamin and Ruth that the family originated or immigrated from Holland. It seems very unlikely that a Dutch connection would have been completely lost among the succeeding generations.(2) The spelling of the family name prior to Bent Mountain seems clearly to have been "Hough" and not "Hoff."The origin of Hough is almost certain to have been English and most likely descended from immigrants from Hough, England (which were the ancestors of Jonathan and Abigail Hough of Wallingford, CT.).The family, while at Bent Mountain, seems to have deliberately adopted "Huff" as the spelling of the family name as all succeeding generations have spelled it that way.(However, one great-grandson of Benjamin, Hiram Hough, continued to use the old spelling.)There is only speculation about why the family chose to change the spelling to Huff. One theory, which seems reasonable, is that the change occurred at the time of the Revolutionary War. The family, if they were of English ancestry, may have wanted to show their loyalty to the American cause by rejecting the "tory" spelling.

The other theory about the change in the spelling of the family name to "Huff", which is not necessarily inconsistent with the first theory, is that the family simply got tired of correcting public servants and others in the spelling of "Hough" and chose to adopt the easier phonetic spelling of "Huff." The spelling of the family name is a very complicating factor for researchers of the Huff genealogy. That is because there are several spellings with different national origins, Hough, Houghe, Hooff, Hoff, and Huff, that phonetically sound nearly the same. It must be remembered that Colonial America was indeed a "melting pot" with almost as many people speaking German, Dutch and other languages as spoke English. A little known historical fact is that the Founding Fathers debated whether to make English the official language in the Constitution. This was rejected because many of the Founding Fathers believed that German might actually emerge as the dominant language of the new nation. So pity the plight of the public servant in Colonial America, many of whom were not well educated themselves, trying to record transactions from many people who either did not speak English well or spoke it with a heavy accent. And unlike today, there does not seem to have been the same concern or expectation among early public servants that names be accurately spelled in public records. So the historical record for the Huff families in Colonial America is replete with inconsistent spellings, as amply demonstrated by the following entries:

1762Loudoun, Co., VA Benjamin Hooffin Clerk's Fee Book

1764Loudoun, Co., VA Benjamin Houghin Clerk's Fee Book

1769Loudoun, Co., VA Benjamin Huffon Tithable List

These may have been the same or different Benjamins, it is difficult to say. But when you look at the entire history of the different family lines in Colonial America, it does appear that the Huff spelling eventually emerged as the dominant family name. And this may be simply because it was the easiest to spell.

But here is where things get a little more complicated with regard to the Huffs at Bent Mountain, VA. And that is because there were other Huffs or Hoffs in the same area at the same time. A 1773 entry in the Botetourt County, Virginia records shows that on May 12 the county court considered a report by Leonard Huff, Joseph Willis, and William Bell on establishing a road from Bent Mountain to Bell's Mill on Little River. It ordered Joseph Willis to survey from Bell's Mill to the top of Long Ridge, and Benjamin Huff to survey from Long Ridge to Bent Mtn. Joseph Willis and Benjamin Huff were each to keep their parts of the new road in repair .A similar entry is recorded in 1779 when Leonard Huff, Jasper Terry, and William Terry were to view the way for a road from Pine Sput to Major Inglishe's. They reported favorably, and in May 1780, Benjamin Huff was to open the road and keep it in repair, using the men of Capt. Wilson's Comp. There are other entries that suggest a family relationship among Leonard and a Phillip Hoff or Huff, and also possibly a Peter, Thomas and William Hoff or Huff in the same area. These Huffs did not live at Bent Mtn. but appear to have founded a community identified on Virginia maps today as "Huffville," a distance of about 40 miles from Bent Mtn.

The association of Leonard and Benjamin Huff in connection with these road building activities certainly suggests a family connection. And it is this geographical association at Bent Mountain that gives rise to the speculation that Benjamin is descended from Dirk Pauluszen Hoff of New York and New Jersey as that is the most probable ancestry of Leonard Hoff or Huff. It appears that Leonard "Huff" also underwent a spelling change at the same time as Benjamin "Hough" as the family name for Leonard is more often spelled "Hoff" in earlier records. It also appears that Leonard Hoff or Huff may have been in the Bent Mountain area as early as the 1740s while Benjamin Hough/Hoff/Huff and family did not arrive until the 1770s.

Did Benjamin relocate to Bent Mountain because he already had family there? There may be something to this. It does appear that Benjamin was in Loudoun County in northern Virginia in the 1760s and early 1770s.Benjamin Hoff shows up on the 1771 Tithable List for Shelburn Parish, Loudoun Co., listed together with Joseph Hoff, Phillip Hoff, Joshua Willson (son-in-law of Benjamin), Cornelius Reed (son-in-law of Benjamin), and also in the same list was Robert Jackson (father-in-law of Phillip Hoff). All these names are later associated at Bent Mountain in southwestern Virginia. Phillip Hoff retained the Hoff spelling, but his sons all preferred Huff. No relationship has ever been established between Phillip Hoff and Benjamin Hoff or Huff, but it does appear they were neighbors in both Loudoun County and Bent Mountain, Virginia.

One aspect that may be worth exploring further is whether there was any family connection with the Wilsons and/or Reeds that pre-dated Loudoun County and Bent Mountain. Of interest here is the marriage of Elizabeth Huff to Noah Reed in Maidenhead (Lawrenceville), Hunterdon Co., NJ, the same location as Dirk Pauluszen Hoff. Elizabeth was born May 4, 1764 and died July 7, 1837. Her father was Abel Huff who died about 1810 or 1811, making him a contemporary of Benjamin. Abel's parents were John Huff(Hoff) born about 1692 and died after June 1769. He was married to Eva Johnson. John Huff (Hoff) would have been age 26 when Benjamin was born in 1718, so it is possible that Benjamin could have been a son or maybe a nephew, although this is highly speculative. Just what relationship, if any, there may have been between Dirk Pauluszen Hoff and John Huff (Hoff) is unknown. Still, a possible connection between Benjamin Hough or Hoff or Huff and the Hoffs of New Jersey and southwestern Virginia cannot be entirely discredited.

One final factor that should be considered are the Christian names among the male descendants of Benjamin, although this is weaker reasoning. While John, Joseph and Stephen are obviously of biblical origin, they are also fairly common English or Anglo-Saxon names. And while Benjamin is not biblical, it does appear to be of English origin. According to the dictionary, a "Benjamin" was a style of overcoat originally made by an English tailor named Benjamin, and became quite fashionable .Although this is a gross generalization, names like Dirk, Leonard and Phillip would be more closely affiliated with the Teutonic or Germanic languages, including Dutch. But of most significance is that John, Joseph and Stephen were oft repeated names among the male descendants of Benjamin. There is not a single Dirk, Leonard, or Phillip among any of the established male or female lines of descendants from Benjamin and Ruth. But then again, Benjamin is only repeated once among the male descendants with grandson Benjamin Wilson, son of Catherine Hough/Huff and Joshua Wilson, born 1765 in Loudoun County, Virginia.

It is a tangled web indeed and we may never know for certain the ancestry of Benjamin and Ruth Hough/Huff/Hoff of Bent Mountain, Virginia. The good news is that the all of the lines of descendants from Benjamin and Ruth, with the exception of Stephen Hough and Sarah Hough Reed, are all now well established and known to each other. There are several genealogical researchers among the various lines of descent and all are sharing information that may close the gap between the known and the uncertain.

About Jonathan Hough, Jr.

Jonathan Hough Jr bp. 22 Mr 1684 Woodbury, Connecticut[1] was the son of Jonathan Hough Sr and Margaret Orvis.

On 10 Apr 1707 in Saybrook, Connecticut he married Sillent (Silence) BATE (27 Jul 1680 Saybrook, CT - ), dau of Samuel and Mary (CHAPMAN) BATE. Silence Bate was the niece of Mary Bate, second wife of Samuel Hough.

Jonathan HOUGH and Samuel HOUGH appeared in Saybrook Colony records about the same time and were there together for several years. As Silence BATE was 27 years old at the time of her marriage, it might be assumed she was an old maid marrying a widower. Or, she could have md a younger man than she was. Land records may indicate his age. We know his occupation was that of a weaver. Known ch listed in Saybrook land records:

Temperance Hough (b.8 Apr 1708 Old Saybrook TWP, Middlesex, Connecticut[2]

Jonathan Hough (28 Nov 1709 Old Saybrook TWP, Middlesex, Connecticut[3] - 1741 Saybrook, Connecticut)

Mehetable Hough (8 Dec 1711 Old Saybrook TWP, Middlesex, Connecticut[4] - )

There were likely other ch if Silence survived the third child, as she was only 31, however, no other ch have been found in Saybrook land records. The lists of ch are incomplete and somewhat randomly placed in land records at the time of some other transaction. It would appear that Jonathan was still in Saybrook in 1724, but the records would have to be studied to determine whether this an absentee taxpayer or a resident.

The other HOUGH family in Saybrook of Samuel HOUGH was also described in Saybrook land records, including his two marriages, and the ch of each marriage. Samuel was a millwright who lived at Norwich, Saybrook, but mostly at Wallingford.

Jonathan HOUGH, brother to Samuel, had md before 1682 to Margaret ORVIS, probable relative to Hannah. Jonathan and Margaret could have had a son named Jonathan, and indeed we know that such a son was baptized in Woodbury on 22 Mar 1685. So it is possible that this Jonathan, at least 22 years old, was marrying Silence BATES, age 27. Or this Jonathan could have been Jonathan, the father, in a second or third marriage. Therefore, we as yet cannot say whether the Jonathan HOUGH of Saybrook was son, nephew, or brother to Samuel.

Samuel also had entered into his land record that he was son of William, who was "son of Edward Hough of West Chester in Cheesshier." This entry establishes the support for the descent of William from Edward of Cheshire, England, and by extension, to Jonathan's ancestry as well.

Jonathan Hough, son of William and Sarah Caulkins Hough, was born 7 February 1659/60 in New London, New London, Connecticut[1].

Jonathan married (1) Margaret Orvis before 1681[2], daughter of George and Elizabeth (Carpenter) ORVIS who later married Richard Bronson as her third husband . Margaret was born June 1661 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut[3], and died probably before April, 1694, in Connecticut.

Early in their marriage, Jonathan and Margaret were among the first settlers of Woodbury, Connecticut (presently in LItchfield County). Jonathan was assigned a home lot prior to 1682. They spent much of their married life in Woodbury, where they joined the church in May, 1682, and baptized their first four children[3]. In 1688, Jonathan acquired land from Hugh Calkins, his grandfather, and William Backus in Joshua’s Tract in eastern Connecticut, which became the town of Windham. He apparently fully intended to move there as he attended the first meeting of the original 15 Windham inhabitants on June 12, 1692 and was elected a townsman and appointed to lay out highways. Jonathan and Margaret’s last child, Mary, was baptized in Farmington, not Woodbury, the month before the first Windham town meeting, supporting the theory that the family was on its way east. Jonathan was last listed as a settler in Windham at the end of May, 1693.

The Woodbury records[4] show that on 3 May 1682 John HOUGH and Margaret, his wife, were admitted to the Woodbury Congregational Church (p 816). Those who held home lots and divisions prior to 1682 included Nathan HOUGH (p 65). In 1712, the inhabitants of Woodbury were taxed for making the North Purchase, and Jonathan HOUGH was taxed 2 shillings, 2 pence. In 1751, a list was made of the original proprietors of Woodbury, and Jonathan HOUGH was included for 12 acres. (p 162). (At that time the original proprietors had died, and the list was made to clarify the records. Clearly, Jonathan HOUGH was the original settler.) The entries for John and Margaret HOUGH and for Nathan HOUGH are believed to be misreadings of the old and fading records. No John and Margaret couple are known, and no Nathan HOUGH is known in early HOUGH families of CT. As noted above, Jonathan HOUGH is said to have md Margaret ORVIS.)

Known children of Jonathan and Margaret are:

Sarah Hough, baptized September 1, 1681, Woodbury, Connecticut[3] - no additional records found.

Hannah Hough, baptized April 1, 1683, Woodbury, Connecticut[3] married William Pratt, son of Joseph Pratt and Marjorie Parker, on 8 Oct 1700 in Saybrook and had six chlldren all born in Saybrook.

Jonathan Hough Jr., baptized March 22, 1684/85, Woodbury, Connecticut[3], married Silence Bates, dau of Samuel Bates and Mary Chapman, on 10 Apr 1707 in Saybrook and had Temperance, Jonathan and Mehetable.

Elizabeth Hough, baptized June 19, 1687, Woodbury, Connecticut[3] - no additional records found.

Mary Hough, baptized May 15, 1692, Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut - no additional records found

Jonathan Hough married (2) Abigail about 1698 probably in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut.

Children of Jonathan Hough and his second wife Abigail recorded in baptismal records for Farmington and Woodbury:

Abigail Hough, b. before 1704, probably in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut, on 21 Aug 1723 in Farmington, CT married Samuel Gridley, son of Thomas Gridley and Elizabeth Clark; died 3 Jan 1724 in Farmington, Connecticut. Son Samuel is mentioned in Jonathan's will of 1731.

Jemina Hough, b. before 1704 probably in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut on 21 Aug 1723 in Farmington, Connecticut married David Chidester and had Jemina and Abigail. David is mentioned in Jonathan's will of 1731.

John Hough, b. before 1704, probably in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut. Appointed co-executor of father's will of 1731. He married Sarah WARNER and moved to New Milford by 1725 when he baptized Gershom. In 1729, he baptized Joseph. When Joseph died in 1755, Gershom and his father admin his estate in Sussex Co, New Jersey.

Zephaniah Hough/Huffe/Hoofe, b. Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut, bp 25 Jun 1704, Hartford, Connecticut[5] on 21 May 1728 married (1) Catharine Weston and had Jonathan, Abigail, Zephaniah Jr; on 30 Jul 1744 married (2) Elizabeth Welch and had Edmund Hough/Huff. Appointed co-executor of father's will of 1731.

Phebe Hough, bp 19 Jan 1706/07, Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut, d. after 1731, probably in Danbury, Fairfield, Connecticut. Phebe was the first of the family to be admitted to the New Milford church in August of 1725, resigned in June 1728 and removed to the church of Danbury. Phebe is mentioned in Jonathan’s will, written in 1731 as "my daugher Phoebe Haise".

Benjamin Hough, bp 5 Jun 1709, Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut on 22 Aug 1738 married Ruth Brownson in New Milford, Connecticut and had Noah Hough. Roger Brownson Sr and Jr plus Abram Brownson signed as witness's to Jonathan's will in 1731.

Jonathan married (3) Abigail (Bristol) Terrill September 1729 in New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut. The church record refers to her as the "Widow" Terrill. Abigail was the second wife of Daniel Terrill. No children are known from this marriage. Jonathan left the use of his house, barn and land after his death or if she removed then for the use of John, Zephaniah and David Chidester who would pay her rent.

Notes:

Story of Joshua's Tract now in Windham County, Connecticut and Grandfather Hugh Caulkins :

Joshua's Tract was an Indian's bequest in 1678 to 16 influential men of Norwich and surrounding towns of land, 8 miles by 8 miles, north of Norwich[6]. William BACKUS who married Elizabeth Royce granddaughter of Hugh CAULKINS and William Hide were three of the 16 men who became the legatees, or owners of the area. Despite disputes as to the legality of the bequest, the owners began to share their lots with relatives and friends. Thus Hugh CAULKINS sold his grandson Jonathan HOUGH a lot in the summer of 1688, and William BACKUS sold lots to HOUGH, ABEL, and RUDD. Settlement began soon afterwards. Jonathan HOUGH, Samuel HIDE, and John ROYCE were first settlers at the Ponde-place. When the town of Windhan was formed in 1691, it was one of two populated places. There were 15 settlers for the first town meeting of 12 June 1692[7]: John Fitch, Thomas Huntington, Joseph Huntington, Samuel Hyde Jonathan Hough and John Royce. Jonathan Hough was appointed to lay out highways. At the next town meeting, there were 22 settlers, 8 at Ponde-place, and 14 at Hither-place. Jonathan HOUGH was appointed to find a suitable burial site for the Ponde-place settlers. The town established a church, but its records have not been investigated. Ch born in Windham are not identified.

No records have been found for children between 1692 and 1704, which is the time that Jonathan or his son Jonathan Jr. was in Windham.

Farmington:

Jonathan HOUGH and his wife were added to the Farmington Church 9 Feb 1706/07 by letter of demission from some other church not named[8]. (p 107, Congregational Ch Records, Farmington, and p 279, NEHGR (Jul 1884).

Jonathan HOUGH/HUFFE/HUFF records show up in Farmington (Hartford Co), then in Woodbury, (Litchfield Co, then back in Farmington, then at Windham (at the time in New London Co, but latter attached to Hartford Co, then back at Farmington.

Chester, Connecticut:

In 1730, a Jonathan HOUGH was in the Parish of Chester, then known as Patequonk, of 4th Society, of Saybrook. Jonathan sold land on 23 Apr 1730 to Benjamin EVEREST. He was later associated with Benjamin EVEREST in 1736 and 1740, both living in the Northern part of Saybrook at Pattaqunk. In 1740, the inhabitants got their area set off as a separate parish; and it eventually was known as the Parish of Chester. From the probable age of this Jonathan HOUGH, it is likely he was the son of Jonathan, Sr, and could be the one who had lived in Saybrook md to Sillent BATE. Some generations of HOUGH must have lived in Chester, as Theoron HOUGH, Sr, of Greene Co, NY, stated he was born in 1797 in Chester, CT.

New Milford:

New Milford was the next town west of Woodbury, and there were close relationships between the families of the two towns. The New Milford records indicate there was a Jonathan HOOFE there in 1729 to marry Widow Terrell. Then, a Benjamin HOUGH was there from about 1735 until 1740. There was a Zepheniah HOUGH there in 1728 until 1740. All are related to Jonathan of Farmington. John HOUGH was also there. They seem to have moved to New Milford and vicinity about 1725.

Ruth HUFF (probable widow of Benjamin Hough/Huff) was in New Milford and md Ezra TERRILL there on 10 Apr 1752. They had had a dau, Mary, born 24 June 1748; and Ezra TERRELL acknowledged her to be his dau and a proper heir to his estate on 25 Dec 1752. (New Milford Town Records, Vol 4:11). By that time Ruth had died, and Ezra had remarried. This Mary TERRILL died 30 Jan 1824 and presumably inherited her just share of the TERRILL estate. Ezra TERRILL had come from Woodbury and had settled in the North Purchase of New Milford.

Hough lineage is Jonathan and Mary/Margaret/Abigail ( ) of CT; William and Sarah (Caulkins) of England, MA, and CT; Edward and Jane Manley of Cheshire, England

Seven BORDEN ch were orphans by 1684, and the names of six who were baptized in New London were John; Samuel; William; Hannah; Sarah; and Joanne. The seventh child may have been born in Lyme.

2. Abiah Hough (15 Sep 1648 Gloucester, Massachusetts[4] - 21 February, 1714/15, New London, New London, CT) on 18 Dec 1667 married William DOUGLAS (1 Sep 1645 - ), son of William and Ann (ANNABLE) DOUGLAS, and lived at Niantic Ferry. They had 8 DOUGLAS children: Elizabeth (25 Feb 1668/69); Sarah (2 Apr 1671); William 19 Feb 1672); Abiah (18 Aug 1675); Rebecca (14 June 1678); Ann (24 May 1680); Richard (19 Jul 1682); and Samuel (1684). Senator Stephen A. Douglas, the debater with Abraham LINCOLN, was a descendant of this family. (See Vol 31:166 NEHGS Register, and Charles H. J. Douglas, A Collection of Family Records with Biographical Sketches and Other Memoranda of Various Families and Individuals Bearing the Name Douglas..., 1879).

3. Sarah Hough (23 Mar 1651 Gloucester, Massachusetts[4] - ) in 1676 married (1) David CARPENTER (c 1627 - 1700) and (2) William STEVENS of Killingsworth. CARPENTER children include Mary; Sarah; David; Elizabeth; and Hannah, all baptized in New London. David sold out in New London in 1688.

4. Samuel Hough (9 Mar 1652/53 New London, Connecticut - 14 Mar 1718 Wallingford, Connecticut) on 25 Nov 1679 married (1) Susanna WROTHAM ( - 5 Sep 1684), daughter of Simon and Sarah WROTHAM and had William; Samuel; and Susanna. 5. John Hough (17 Oct 1655 New London, CT - 26 Aug 1715 Norwich, CT) was on the 1672 census for Norwich. John was a carpenter and military leader. On 27 Jan 1680 in Norwich, he married Sarah POST (5 Nov 1659 Saybrook - 9 Oct 1754), daughter of John and Hester (HYDE) POST of Norwich. Their children were Sarah; Hannah; Abiah; Hester; John; David; and Jabez. Daughter Abiah is the 3rd Great-grandmother of President Grover Cleveland[6]

6. William Hough (17 Oct 1657 New London, Connecticut[7] - 22 Apr 1705) may have married twice. Savage shows that one Mary JAMES (bap 11 Mar 1666), daughter of Haddam JAMES, on 16 Aug 1685 married William HOUGH. No children are known from this marriage. The surviving wife was Ann LATHROP (1667 - 19 Nov 1745) of Norwich, dau of Samuel and Elizabeth (SCUDDER) LATHROP of Norwich. Children were William; Samuel; Hannah; Elizabeth; Abigail; Sarah; Martha; and an unnamed infant. Some of these disappear from the records. (Elida C. HOUGH showed William with only one child, Anne; but probate records indicate the others). (New England Marriages Prior to 1700 shows one William HOUGH on 6 Aug 1685 md Elizabeth BATES. There is thus considerable confusion on the family of William HOUGH, Jr.)

7. Jonathan Hough, Sr. was born 7 Feb 1659/60 in New London, Connecticut. He married (1) Margaret Orvis prior to 1681, daughter of George and Elizabeth (Carpenter) Orvis according to New England Marriages and lived in Woodbury and Farmington in the western part of CT. (The name was shown as PORVIS, but is more likely ORVIS, as Jonathan's brother Samuel md Hannah ORVIS at about the same time.) Jonathan married (2) Abigail _____ about 1698 probably in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut. Jonathan married (3) Abigail (Bristol) Terrill referred to as the Widow Terrill. Abigail was the second wife of Daniel Terrill who died in Milford on 10 June1727. Jonathan's name was recorded as Jonathan Hoofe.

8. Deborah Hough (21 Oct 1662 New London, CT - )

9. Abigail Hough (5 Mar 1665 New London, CT - )

10. Anna Hough (29 Aug 1667 New London, CT - )

About William Hough

William Hough migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

William Hough was one of several sir (sic) named families who came to America with the company of Reverand Richard Blyman's party. They landed at Tryndall Cove, opposite Bishic Island in 1640. A house carpenter by trade, he resided for several years in Glouchester, Massacheusetts. He served as a Selectman of Glouchester from 1649-1650 and a local area, Hough's Neck, was named for him. He married Sarah Caulkins on Oct. 28, 1645 - daughter of Deacon Hugh Caulkins & Ann Easton Caulkins of Gloucester. Their first 3 children were born in Gloucester and the rest were born in the area of New London, Conn.

Biography

William HOUGH was born c 1619 in Chester, Cheshire, England and migrated to Massachusetts about 1640 as a member of the Rev. Richard Blinman religious party (often called the Welsh party because Blynman was Welsh, but most members of the party were from Cheshire.) first to Marshfield, then Gloucester and finally New London, Connecticut. He was a housewright, or carpenter, and followed that trade wherever he lived. He died in 1683. He may have more descendants in America than any other immigrant of the Hough name.

William Hough's son, Samuel, late in life, recorded in the land records of Saybrook that his grandfather was "Edward Hough of West (sic) Chester in Cheshire." Records of Edward Hough, the father of William, have been found which place him in the City of Chester, which was informally called "West Chester" in the 16th and 17th centuries. (Note: Edward was not the father of Richard Hough who came to America about 1684 with William Penn over 40 years later.)

Samuel HOUGH did not list his grandmother's name. Edward's marriage record has recently been found in Chester Parish Records. William's mother was Jane Manley.

Early History of Chester

The following is an account of the early history of Chester as written in "The Cheshire Sheaf" [1]l:

"This noble city was built by Eifroc Cadarn, ante Christum 827. It was called by the Emperor Antonine, Deva; by the Britons, Cast and Cacr Leon; and by the Saxons, Legea Cepvan and by us, Westchester. The Deputies of the Roman Emperors were seated in it. It is built four square and enclosed with a Wall two miles in compass. It has 9 Parish Churches but the Monastery of St John without the Gate was the fairest Solemn Building. Near the River standcth the Castle on a Rocky Hill where Courts Palatine and the Assizes are kept twice a Year. The chief Streets have Galleries called Rows with Shops on both Sides.

"In 883 the Danes landed and met Egbert on Hengist Down and were routed in that Battle. This Egbert, indignant at the Welsh assisting the Danes, besieged Chester and destroyed the brazen Efligies of Cadwallon King of Britain and expelled the Welsh from his Kingdom. In 913 the City, which had been destroyed by the Danes and Saxons, was rebuilt by Elfleda, Lady of the Mercians, and soon after King Edgar was rowed in his Barge by Kings along the River Dee. Hugh Lupus, first Earl of Chester, Englefield, and Denbighland, died AD 1,100. He was son to Richard, Earl of Auranges, and Margaret, daughter of Harlowine, a Nobleman of Normandy who married Arlet, daughter of a Burgess in Falois, who was also Mother to the Conqueror. Richard, son of Hugh Lupus, was second Earl and Randolph de Bohun son of Hugh Lupus's sister was third Earl his father John whom Hugh Lupus's sister married was fourth Earl Hugh de Bohun fifth de Bohun sixth John Scott was seventh Earl of Chester and then the King took the Earldom into his own hands."

Hough DNA Analysis

Paternal descendants of William Hough have genetic matches through the Y-Chromosome DNA which is passed down from father to son. Individual test results not only match other paternal descendants of William Hough but also show close matches to paternal descendants of Richard Hough (c. 1650 Cheshire, England - 1705 Pennsylvania), John Hough (c. 1653 Wilmslow, Cheshire, England - 1752 Bucks, Pennsylvania) and others including disconnected Hough individuals first identified in the Southern states in the mid-1700’s. All have the ancestral Haplogroup of I-M253/P-109 and terminal SNP indicating a common ancestor for those that did the Big Y test (see below). Based on these test results, it is concluded that all have a common ancestor that probably lived in or near Cheshire, England no later than the 1500’s and perhaps several hundred years earlier. Note also that individuals with both the "Huff" and "Hough" spelling match up. Earlier, before the advent of DNA testing, Hough researcher Granville Hough found that descendants of the Hough families of Cheshire pronounced their name as "Huff" whether it was spelled Hough or Huff. He concluded that persons of English ancestry whose name is pronounced Huff is likely a descendant of the Cheshire group. The present DNA tests confirm Granville's conclusion.

DNA Confirmation Statement

Paternal relationship is confirmed by a Family Tree DNA BigY test match between the following descendants of William (and his father Edward) Hough. Only difference is descent from his son Samuel for the first three people vs. Jonathan for the last two people. Common SNP between all five is I-4740. Difference between Samuel vs Jonathan descent is the terminal SNP as shown.

SNP I-Y4740 - 6 matches. Only difference is descent from his son Samuel vs. Jonathan.

Early Life in Gloucester

William Hough was a house-carpenter and lived at Trynall, Cove, where, and on Biskie Island, opposite, he had land. He was a selectman in 1649 and 1650. His departure is spoken of in the latter year, when he joined the emigration to New London.

He married Sarah, daughter of Hugh Calkins on Oct 28, 1645;

On 28 Oct 1645 at Gloucester, Massachusetts William married Sarah CAULKINS[2] (baptized 6 May 1627 Waverton Parish, Cheshire, England[3] - c 1700 CT), daughter of Hugh CAULKINS (before April 8, 1603 Waverton, Cheshire, England - c 1690 Norwich, Connecticut.)

William and Sarah had ten Children.

There is no info on what happened to the last three children. It is likely they married in the area if they did not die young.

Move to Connecticut

The HOUGH family in 1651/52 joined the remnant of the BLYNMAN party in moving to Connecticut. They first lived on New Street, just opened for the Cape Ann company. It became known as Cape Ann Lane and had nine settlers, including CAULKINS, AVERY, ROBERTS, COITE, LESTER, ALLEN, MEADES, ISBELL, and HOUGH.

Military Service

He was sergeant of the first Military Company of New London. He was a volunteer in King Phillip's War, the order of his enrollment being number 136. He was appointed one of a committee of seven to attend to the fortification of New London; and of the six points fortified, he had personal supervision. For his services he was granted land in the "Cedar Swamp Lots" in Narragansett Township, now Voluntown, Connecticut, granted to the English Volunteers by the General Court of Connecticut.

William Hough Sr. died 10 Aug 1683 in New London, Connecticut[8]

There were 20 families in this Cape Ann group. Most were probably members of original Blynman party in 1640/l41.

About Edward H. Hough

Biography

According to his burial record, Edward Hough was born on 1 May 1587 in Chester, Cheshire, England. A copy of the birth records from St. John's Church in Chester list Edward Hough, son of Richard, bp. in 1587. The paper has been damaged and the exact date of baptism is partially obscured. It also shows "Baggerley" on the next line which may have been the maiden name of Richard's wife. Research shows that a Baggley did live in Cheshire during this period. This Richard Hough is probably not the Richard Hough of Leighton and Thornton Hough and is a different Richard Hough. He was likely closely related to Thomas Hough who had four children baptized at St. John the Baptist Church in Chester.

Edward Hough lineage has not been confirmed. Some believe that the Hough's who arrived in America in the 1600's were descendants of the del Hogh (later to become Hough) family who were recorded in Cheshire as early as 1260.[1]

Edward Hough lived in the Handbridge Section of Chester, on Green Way, a lane that still exits, which is a 10 minute walk from the Parish Church of St. Mary-on-the-Hill across a bridge over the River Dee. He and his wife Jane Manley were married in that church, and are buried near each other in the churchyard. Details can be found in the 2010 NEHGR article[2]. Briefly, the Chester City Council Minutes of 9 October 1635 prove that Richard Hough, and his siblings later named in his will were children of Edward and Jane Hough:

"Richard Hough petitioned that about three years ago the then Treasurers granted a void piece of ground, part of the City waste in Greene Way in Handbridge near the River Dee, to his father, Edward Hough, with liberty to build a cottage on it on payment of 12d. a year rent. His father had built part of the cottage and the petitioner had, after his father's death, completed it at great cost to himself. He therefore asked for a lease of it for the lives of himself, his wife Anne, and his brother John, at the former rent. This was granted providing he gave his mother houseroom or found somewhere else for her to live and paid the rent for it."

On 10 Nov 1605 at St. Mary's-on-the-Hill, Chester, Cheshire, England, Edward ( (Edwardus) married Jane Manley[3] [4]

Known Children:

Winifred Hough (1614 – aft. 1645) md John Beddlow on 1 Oct 1641 at St. Mary's, Chester, Cheshire, England[5]

William Hough (b abt. 1619 probably Chester) migrated to America and married Sarah Caulkins. He died on 10 Aug 1683 in New London, New London, Connecticut, British Colonial America. St. John Church in Chester show William Hough, son of Edward, bp. in1620.

(7) Leighton Thornton Hough line: The del Hogh line became known as the Leighton Thornton Hough line when Richard del Hogh married Ellen, dau of Roger Thornton, who was also heiress of William de Leighton, hence the manors of Thornton and Leighton passed to the del Hogh family.

Richard Hough of Leighton and Thornton Hough (5 Nov. 1505, 1st son of Thomas Hough of Leighton by Catherine, daughter of Thomas Grosvenor of Eaton) was the servant of Thomas Cromwell. He is first mentioned as acting for Cromwell in December 1534 and in 1536 he appears more specifically as one of the lord privy seal’s men, being then described as a ‘sage and sober person’: he was not in regular service but was one of those to be allowed in the household only ‘when they have commandment or cause necessary to repair thither’. He did business for Cromwell in Chester, whence in January 1538 he reminded the minister of a promise to make him rider of Delamere forest in Cheshire, and in 1540 he carried messages and letters to the council in Ireland. A less conventional outcome of the relationship was the marriage of Hough’s son William to Cromwell’s illegitimate daughter Jane[28]

William Hough (c. 1537 at Leighton and Thornton Hough - c. 1585) was the son of Richard Hough and Christien daughter of Sir George Calverley (c. 1460 - c. 1538) of The Lea, Cheshire. Abt 1550 he married Jane Cromwell ( - 3 Nov 1580 Neston), daughter of Thomas Cromwell[1][2].

Thomas Hough b. about 1538 at Leighton by Neston, Cheshire, England, son of Richard Hough and Christien Calverley, married Elizabeth Wilbraham possible dau of Richard Wilbraham, MP (1502 - 1558) and Dorothy Grosvenor.

Richard Hough of Leighton and Thornton Hough was christened on 6 Dec 1563 at Neston[29] the son of Thomas Hough (c. 1537 Leighton and Thornton Hough - c. 1585) and Elizabeth Wilbraham possible dau of Richard Wilbraham, MP (1502 - 1558) and Dorothy Grosvenor

Rychard Houghe bp. 24 Aug 1623 at Neston, Cheshire, England; father: John Hough[3].

The souce of "West Chester, Cheshire" as the home of Edward Hough is the family record of his Grandson Samuel in the Land Records of Saybrook, Vol. 2, pg. 32, which was entered on Feb. 4, 1702/3, presumably by Samuel himself, and begins: "Samuel Hough, which was the Son of William Hough; which was the son of Edward Hough; of West Chester in Cheesshir; Was born at New London March the ninth 1652/3 ..." But according to the Cheshire Records Office, there is not now nor has there ever been a town or religious parish in Cheshire of that name. But it apparently was used informally in the 16th and 17th centuries to refer to the city of Chester.

Cheshire Ancient Parishes[30] shows that Chester: St Mary on the Hill includes the towns of Claverton ??, Eaton & Eccleston, Little Mollington, Marlston cum Lache, Mollington, Little Moston (near Chester) and Upton by Chester. Chester: St. Oswald includes Bache, Blacon cum Crabwall, Boughton, Great, Churton Heath, Croughton, Great Boughton, Huntington, Iddinshall, Lea Newbold, Newton by Chester, Saighton, Threapwood ??, Wervin.

Cheshire and the Domesday Book[31]: The Wirral, in 1086 A.D. offered a very different profile than it is today. It was an important Cheshire peninsula. Domesday Wirral holdings of Norman families recorded in coastal Wirral were the villages of Eastham, Wallasey, Meols, Little and Greater Caldy, Thursaston, Ness, Neston, Little Nestone, Heswall, and Gayton. Inland Wirral included Greasby, Oulton, Mere, Prenton, Thingwall, Raby, Storeton, Saugall and Upton. Absent from the Domesday Survey were Birkenhead, Leasowe, Bidston, Moreton, Hoylake, West Kirby (included in Little and greater Caldy), Parkgate, Newton, Irby, Frankby, Ellesmere, and other more recently built towns and villages. Chester, of course, was the hub of the whole county of Cheshire, in fact, the hub of the whole north west.

See profile for John Hough, the father of Richard Hough who was part of the Quaker migration to Pennsylvania with William Penn, for list of Hough records in Macclesfield in eastern Cheshire.Francis Hough accompanied Richard as an indentured servant for two years.

Also see profile for John Hough another Quaker who arrived in Pennsylvania the same year as Richard Hough.

Also see profile for Lawrance Hough with a listing of Houghs in Wilmslow Parish.
