About Elizabeth Packard

Biography

Parentage

Samuel Packer/Packard's parentage of a daughter named Elizabeth is established by his will which contains bequests to grandchildren Israel and Deliverance Augar[1][2] and (2) records of the marriage of Thomas Alger of Taunton and Elizabeth Packer of Bridgewater.[3][4][5][6] Her mother was presumably Elizabeth (Unknown) Packer/Packard who, as established by his will and estate records, was Samuel's wife at the time of his death.[1][2] The probability that she was the mother of this profile's Elizabeth is supported by their both being named Elizabeth.

Date and Place of Birth

Elizabeth's date of birth is uncertain. Based on her date of marriage (1665), she was probably born sometime in 1639-1646. During that time period, her father was living in Hingham.[7] Hobart's Hingham journal contains the following entry for August 19, 1646:

Sarah & Mary Smith bapt

Israell Hodsden & Elizabeth

Samuell Hannah Israell Peck

bapt 19---------------------[8]

As discussed in 1646 Hingham 'Peck' Baptisms, the reference to "Peck" in this record is very probably a recordation or transcription error and the record probably relates to the baptisms of Samuel's children Elizabeth, Samuel, Hannah and Israel. Since Samuel Packer/Packard. Since Samuel Packer/Packard settled in Hingham in 1638,[7] this record confirms that Elizabeth was born sometime in 1638-1646.

Karl S. Packard proposed that the children were probably born in the order in which they were listed and from that assumption estimated that Elizabeth was born about 1639.[9] However, while children were commonly listed in birth order in records, they were not always listed in that order. It there is perhaps less assurance that they were so listed in the case of a third-person journal such as the Hobart Journal. The actual or estimated dates of marriage of the siblings -- Elizabeth (1665), Samuel (ca 1675), Hannah (ca 1667) and Israel (no known marriage)[10] -- are of little help. Samuel's estimated date of marriage, in fact, suggests that he may have been the youngest of the four siblings and not born until 1646, although the fact that his father was referred to as "Samuel Pecker Seynior" in a 1665 record[11] suggests that his son Samuel may have reached maturity by that date. Therefore, while it is perhaps most probable that Elizabeth was the first born of the four siblings and thus born probably sometime in 1638-1640, the only thing that can be said with certainty is that she was born sometime in or after 1638 and before August 19, 1646.

Residency in Hingham, Weymouth and Bridgewater

As discussed in her father's profile, Elizabeth and her family lived first in Hingham, moved to Weymouth sometime in 1652-1655, and then to Bridgewater sometime in 1662-1664.

Marriage

Elizabeth married Thomas Alger of Taunton on November 14, 1665. Their marriage was recorded in both the Taunton town register[3][4][5] and the records of the First Church of Bridgewater.[6] The location of their marriage is uncertain. However, since the bride lived in Bridgewater and their marriage was recorded in the church records there, they were most likely married in Bridgewater.

Children

Elizabeth and Thomas had the following children. Their identities are established by the will of Elizabeth's father, Samuel Packer/Packard, which contained bequests to his grandchildren "Israel Augur" and "Deliverance Augur."[1][2] It is possible that Elizabeth and Thomas had additional children.

Israel,[12] b. probably in 1666-7,[13] m. before 1689[14] Patience Hayward[12]

Deliverance,[12] probably sometime in 1668-1672, m. by 1693[15] Thomas Latham,[16][17][15] d. before January 1, 1749 (date of appointment of administrator of her estate) at Bridgewater[17]

Residency in Taunton or Bridgewater?

The place of residency of Elizabeth and Thomas after their marriage is uncertain. The fact that Thomas had just acquired property in Taunton[18] and the fact that he does not appear in the Bridgewater town records suggests that they may lived in Taunton. However, the fact that records for their children show that they lived in Bridgewater suggests that Elizabeth and Thomas may have moved there.

Death

No will or estate records have been found for Elizabeth. Since she had two children after her marriage in November 1665, she probably died after 1668. Since she is not mentioned in her father's October 29, 1684 will and he lists his other five daughters and makes a handsome bequest to her son Israel,[1][2] she was almost certainly dead by that date. Since she probably lived in Taunton or perhaps Bridgewater, she probably died in one of those two towns.

About Ens. Samuel Packard

Samuel Packard

Birth: unknown, England Death: Nov. 7, 1684

Samuel and Elizabeth Packard are the progenitors of most of the 'Packard's in the USA. There have been questions surrounding the accuracy of published information, going back to Packard history first presented in 1840. This biography accepts as fact the probable conclusions presented by Karle S. Packard in Packard's Progress, Vol. 17 [Feb. 1991], pp. 9-12.

Samuel was the third son of George and Mary (Wyther) Packard, baptized 17 Sep 1612 in Stonham Aspal, Suffolk, England.

Samuel married Elizabeth (surname unknown) in England. No record of the marriage has been found.

Samuel arrived at Boston 10 Aug 1638. The ship was the "Diligent". He came with his wife Elizabeth Packard and "a child". The child is probably Mary.

Diligent Passenger List - 1638

The Packard family first lived in Hingham. About 1654, they moved to Weymouth, where Samuel served as a Selectman for 2 years. About 1664, they moved to Bridgewater, where Samuel spent the rest of his life and served the community in many posts.

Samuel and Elizabeth had fourteen children. Packard's Progress makes the case for the birth order of these children and their approximate birth years, based on a study of the baptismal records, marriages, and wills. Only the birth of John was officially recorded. The first 12 children were born in Hingham. John and Nathaniel were born in Weymouth. None were born in Bridgewater. Samuel's will was dated 29 Oct 1684. He died on 7 Nov 1684 in Bridgewater, Plymouth county, Plymouth Colony. His place of burial is not known.

Samuel was the third son of George and Mary (Wyther) Packard, baptized 17 Sep 1612 in Stonham Aspal, Suffolk, England.

Samuel Packard married Elizabeth (——) [MD 15:254]; born probably Suffolk, England; died after 27-Oct-1694 [MD 15:251]. She married 2nd after 07-Nov-1684 (1st husband's death) and before 27-Oct-1686 (2nd husband's will [MD 15:248]) as his 2nd wife John Washburn; baptized 26-Nov-1620 Bengeworth, Worcester, England [MFIPCooke 9]; died 12-Nov-1686 Bridgewater [MD 15:251]. This marriage is confirmed by a 27-Oct-1694 deed from Elizabeth [MD 15:251]. Note: There is no evidence to support the often repeated conjecture that her surname was "Stream." Elizabeth's surmane does not appear in any records and Stream was not a usual surname in East Anglia.

About George Packard

Definition of Yeoman

According to Wikipedia: "During the late 14th to 18th centuries, yeomen were farmers who owned land (freehold, leasehold or copyhold). Their wealth and the size of their landholding varied. Sir Anthony Richard Wagner, Garter Principal King of Arms, wrote that "a Yeoman would not normally have less than 100 acres" (40 hectares) "and in social status is one step down from the Landed gentry, but above, say, a husbandman".[1] Often it was hard to distinguish minor landed gentry from the wealthier yeomen, and wealthier husbandmen from the poorer yeomen."

Biography

Unlikely Parents

George is not mentioned in the will of Moses Packard and the location is not correct. The fact that Moses nor Joan seem to be family names puts even more doubt on him being the son of Moses Packard and Unknown Joan. He is being detached.
