•Note: Letter written by Patience Marvel's son, Nathan, ca. 1885.

My father, James Knowles, was born in Delaware. He united in marriage with Patience Marvel in 1778 and there were born unto them in that state 5 sons and one daughter, named, Prettyman, James, Eddy, Comfort, and Jesse. In 1795 they left Delaware and settled near Greensborough, Green County, Georgia. Here was born unto them three sons, Ephraim, Eli and Asa. They lived in Georgia sixteen years and removed to Indian [Indiana] Territory in the closing days of 1811. My mother died of consumption a few years after coming to Indiana. My father married a second wife by the name of Clark and unto them was born a son John Lowry.[2]

Patience Marvel (1758-1817) daughter of David and Sarah (Prettyman) Marvel married James Knowles. James' father Richard was the son of Silver Head Knowles. The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 started an industrial revolution in farming. Many families decided to leave Delaware and make their fortune raising cotton in Georgia. In the fall of 1795, James and Patience (Marvel) Knowles, with their six children, Prettyman, James, Eddy, Jesse, Comfort Marvel, and their baby Nathan, who had been born June 17, 1795, started for Georgia. They made their home about fifteen miles south of the present city of Greensboro, Greene County, Georgia. Three sons Ephriam, Eli, and Asa were born to them in their new home.

James and Patience Knowles disposed of their property in Georgia and in November 1811, together with the children and their families, they started the journey to the Indiana Territory. In all, they made a caravan of twenty-three persons. They passed through Cherokee Indian country and found them willing to sell the provisions they needed. As they neared the Ohio River, news of the Battle of Tippecanoe on Nov 5th reached them. On the evening of Dec 16, they encamped on the northern shore of the Ohio River and felt the tremors of the great earthquake of 1811. The next morning, they continued northward and met John Marvel and Jesse Knowles who came to meet them and lead them to "Old Fort Branch" in Gibson County, Indiana where they had settled earlier. After a few days rest the Knowles family built a cabin of poles in the dense forest. Patience (Marvel) Knowles died of consumption on May 5th 1817. James Knowles was married a second time to Elizabeth (Fugat) Clark a widow with five children. To this union two children were born; Prudence who died in infancy and John Lowerey Knowles. James Knowles died Oct 23, 1839 and was laid to rest beside his wife of many years. From Marvel History for the Descendants of Prettyman Marvel, Jr. by Mildred Marvel Burwell, Ca. 1970.

About David Marvel

Her grandparents were Thomas Prettyman, Sr. and Comfort Burton.

See: Prettyman Family Line

Biography

David Marvel Sr., born on 5 January 1729 in Baltimore Hundred, Somerset County, Maryland, on land that was later assigned to Sussex Co., Delaware, was a rich colonial landowner, planter and horse-breeder. His peach orchards produced the finest brandy and his well-bred horses were very highly considered in all the mid-Atlantic and Southern colonies. David Sr.'s eldest son, Prettyman Marvel, was widely known as the finest horseman in Delaware as a young man.[1]

David, who lived about 70 years, had two families: first two daughters, Prudence & Patience and a son, Prettyman Marvel, by Comfort [Sarah] Prettyman, whom he married in about 1754, and second: a daughter, Elizabeth ("Betsy"), and two sons: David Jr., and Burton Marvel, by Sarah [Sallie] Prettyman, whom he married on January 5, 1789, at the Lewes Presbyterian Church, apparently after divorcing his first Prettyman wife, Comfort.[2] The two women were either sisters or first cousins and Comfort was 25+ years older (b. around 1733) than Sarah/Sallie (b. in 1760).

David Marvel Sr., was also a Tory (British) sympathizer at the time of the American Revolution, a sentiment apparently not shared by his wife Comfort and her children, especially their son Prettyman Marvel, who, born in 1763, was a teenager during the conflict. Politics may have been what split the family up at that time although David Marvel Sr., managed to hold onto his lands and livelihood, so he must not have acted openly on his political opinions. Although among the first public assemblies to "separate" itself from King George III in 1776 and the first state to ratify the US Constitution in 1787, Delaware was bitterly divided over the grievances that led to American independence and remained so until the War of 1812.

In the Marvel family, David Sr., separated from his first wife and three grown children, marrying the much-younger Sarah or "Sallie" Prettyman in January 1789; their daughter Betsey was born on October 25 of that year, followed by David Jr., ca. 1791 and Burton Marvel, ca. 1793. David Sr., made his Last Will & Testament on January 4, 1796, and it was proven February 9, 1796, indicating he died in late January or early February 1796. In this will, he essentially disinherited his three older children, naming only the three younger ones as his heirs, with the exception of a small sum owed Prettyman Marvel for land previously assigned to him and one shilling to his daughter Patience (Prudence (Knowles) is assumed to have already passed away as she is not mentioned).

David Sr. had three younger children, referred to as such in his will -- Elizabeth (aka Betsy), David [Jr.], and Burton -- children by his second wife, Sallie. The records of St. George's Church, Indian River, state that Betsy, daughter of David and Sarah Marvel, was born 25 October 1789. In 1803-04, David (Jr.) and Burton Marvel were listed in the Sussex Co. tax list with a guardian, Eli Pepper, so they were still under age at that time. [3]. Their mother, Sarah Prettyman Marvel Dazey died in 1803.

After David Sr.'s death, his widow Sarah had married Moses Dazey (De Valinger, Sussex County, Delaware, Probate Records, p. 267), and they had a son Prettyman Marvel Dazey on 5 December 1797[4].

Levin Wilson, the first historian of the Knowles and Marvel families, stated that David Sr.'s [first] wife was Comfort Prettyman. She was Wilson's great-grandmother; his grandfather, James Knowles, was still alive when he was growing up, so his information is reliable. Wilson did not know of the existence of the three younger children, calling Prettyman Marvel, David Sr.'s only son. A death date for David [Jr.] is given as 1721[5].

Nothing further is known about David Marvel, Jr., orphaned by both his parents before he was 13 and who died at around 30 years old. His half-brother and sisters left Delaware within a year of David Sr.'s death and never returned. [6]

Please note that the many Family Trees that list David Jr., and his full-siblings Elizabeth & Burton Marvel as being born between 1765 and 1769 are simply wrong. Their parents only married in 1789 and the boys were still under-age (under 21 yrs) in 1803/04.

•Birth: 5 JAN 1719/20 in Sussex Co., Delaware [NOTE: Marvel family history says he was born on 5 Jan 1729 - his parents marriage occurred on January 16, 1720; unlikely he was born out of wedlock. A birthdate in 1729 is adopted here.]

•Will: Dover, Delaware, United States

•Will: 4 JAN 1796

•Note: Dated

•Death: 9 JAN 1796 in Sussex Co., Delaware, United States 1 3 5 4

•Probate: 9 FEB 1796

•Note: More likely his 1st wife was Comfort Prettyman. There is much confusion of dates here. Obtain records referred to in other notes as well as e-mails extracts below (from genforum.com): John Maya: Prettyman Marvel was born 1763, but his parents David and Sara Marvel married on Jan 5, 1789 at Lewes and Coolspring Presbyterian Church per Ed Wright's Vital Records p 132. How could Sara Rogers Marvel have a child before she married the father? John Maya: I do not understand how David Marvel Jr could have married in 1789 when he was still a minor in 1803-4 per Sussex Co., DE Orphans Court Records. Certainly below accounts based on legal records is more accurate: Pauline Batchelder editor of "A Somerset Sampler, and also writer of section on Marvels states: "There is some confusion regarding wife of David Marvel: most Marvel accounts state that she was Sarah Prettyman, but Levin Wilson of Gibson Co., Ind., a great-grandson of David Marvel, stated in 1896 that she was Comfort Prettyman and that his mother,Comfort Marvel (Knowles) Wilson, was named for her; he also stated that David and Comfort's family was composed of daus. and only one son, Prettyman-as if he had been unaware of the three youngest children.

It is true that records of Lewes and Coolspring Presbyterian Church, Lewes, Del., state David's will names wife Sally; and Thomas Prettyman's will names dau. Sarah Marvel; but these records were all made after the three oldest ch. were grown. David Marvel married first Comfort Prettyman and had issue: (a)Prudence, b: 1755; (b) Patience (31 Jan 1758-5 May 1817), (c) Prettyman (29 Jan. 1763-1Oct 1856), David m., probably second, 5 Jan. 1789 Sarah Prettyman (d. 1801), dau. of Thomas Prettyman and Elizabeth (Enloe) Prettyman...David Marvel had issue, (d) Elizabeth, (e) David, (f) Burton."

Family genealogist D. Mitchell Jones stated: "John you are entirely correct. David Marvel Jr could not have married Sara Prettyman as he would have married his mother, and plus he was still a minor in 1803-4. The records are very clear on the family of David Marvel. It has been commonly accepted that the mother of Prettyman Marvel was Sara Prettyman dau of Thomas Prettyman. This in spite of the fact that Prettyman Marvel was born 29 Jan 1763 and his father, David Marvel did not marry Sara Prettyman until 5 Jan 1789." (F. Ed Wright, Vital Records of Kent and Sussex Co., DE p 132 and abstracted from records of Lewes & Coolspring Presbyterian Church).

David Marvel in his will probated 9 Jan 1796 names heirs: wife Sally Marvel; sons David, Burton and Prettyman Marvel; daus, Elizabeth Marvel and Patience Knowles; and dau-in-law (step daughter) Polly Prettyman. He mentions his three youngest children, Elizabeth, David and Burton Marvel. David by making a difference in his three youngest children indicates that he had been previously married. Him mentioning a step daughter Polla Prettyman indicates this also, and indicates that he had previously been married to a Prettyman widow. The children of David Marvel were: 1. Patience Marvel b 31 Jan 1758 m James Knowles. 2. Prettyman Marvel b 29 Jan 1763 m Levina Rogers dau of John Rogers and Comfort Prettyman. Children by David Marvel and Sara Prettyman 3. Elizabeth Marvel born 25 Oct 1789 )Wright p 108) 4. David Marvel 5. Burton Marvel Sara Prettyman Marvel by 12 Sep 1797 Moses Dazey as she appeared in court as Sara Dazey and widow of David Marvel. Sara Prettyman Marvel Dazey and Moses Dazey had son Prettyman Marvel Dazey b 5 Dec 1797 (Wright p 158). The Sussex Co., DE Orphans Court Records show that in 1803-4 that David and Burton Marvel were under guardianship of Eli Pepper, so they were still underage at that time.

David Marvel grew to manhood on his father's plantation in Delaware. Peach growing was the main industry in Delaware and the Marvels gave much care and attention to their orchards. From this luscious fruit the Marvels made exceptional brandy. A decanter of peach brandy always graced the Marvel table. Another vocation that merited much care and attention among the Marvels was the raising of fine horses. Of Thomas II's four sons it was said that David was the most avid respecter of those fine horses. When he went courting as a young man, no young man in the country rode finer horses.

David married Sarah Prettyman , daughter of Thomas, II and Elizabeth (Enloes) Prettyman (See The Prettyman Family), in 1754. David's will, dated 4 January 1796, is recorded in the Hall of Records in Dover, Delaware. His brother's wills are recorded there also. David's will was probated 9 February 1796. In it he bequeathed all his lands and livelihood to his wife, 'Salla', to be at her disposal during her life or widowhood. At her decease or remarriage his land was to be divided between his sons David and Burton. To his daughter, Elizabeth, he left one cupboard, one dozen pewter plates and one spinning wheel.

To "daughter-in-law, Polly Prettyman," he bequeathed one feather bed and furniture, one spinning wheel, one chest and pewter dish, four pewter plates, six pewter spoons, two chairs, one earthen pan and one basin. To his daughter, Patience Knowles, he bequeathed one shilling sterling. To son, Prettyman Marvel, he bequeathed one shilling sterling and thirty-five dollars. The money was due Prettyman for his part of said land. (In the estate inventory he received an amount of thirteen pounds, four shillings and six pence.) After paying funeral charges and other expenses, the rest of his estate was to be divided among the three youngest children, Elizabeth, David, Jr. and Burton. The inventory of the estate of David Marvel (except the land) amounted to 98 pounds, 16 shillings and 6 pence. The amount left was 58 pounds, 11 shillings and 5 pence to be given to Elizabeth, David, Jr. and Burton. Since daughter, Prudence, is not mentioned in her father's will it is assumed that she had died before 1796. Soon after David Marvel's death his widow married Moses Daisy. Sarah (Prettyman) Marvel Daisy died in 1801 in Sussex county, Delaware. Source; American Compendium Vol 4; Hall of Records, Dover, Delaware; Marvel History pg 9-10; 1790 Delaware census; Prettyman Letter by Ethel Prettyman; Prettyman Genealogy; Joan Knowles, corresp.

David Marvel is the oldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Huggins) Marvel and was born in Sussex County, Delaware, January 5, 1721. Some records gave conflicting dates of 1727 and 1729. We feel 1721 is the most plausible. It is the date used in this account. David's sweetheart, Sarah (Sally) Prettyman, was the daughter of Thomas, Jr. and Elizabeth (Enloes) Prettyman. John and Mary (?) Prettyman, her emigrant ancestors, came from England to Maryland about 1663. By July 1643, they had migrated to Northampton County, Virginia. They owned extensive tracts of land here and in Accomac County. Later their descendants went to Delaware and became wealthy land owners.

One record gives Sarah Prettyman's birth date as 1725 and the date of her marriage to David Marvel as 1744. Both dates seem questionable. [1754 is the more-likely marriage date] David and Sarah (Prettyman) Marvel were the parents of six children: Prudence, Patience, Prettyman, Elizabeth, David Jr. and Burton. [sic: David Marvel had 2 wives, both from the Prettyman family; first, Comfort Sarah Prettyman (b. 1726); they had the 1st 3 children named here and second, Sarah/Sally Prettyman, her 1st cousin (b. 1760) who was mother of the latter 3 children, ca. 1790. - Note by Chet Snow]

The will of David Marvel dated January 4, 1796, is recorded in the Hall of Records in Dover, Delaware, as are the wills of his brothers, Thomas Jr., Phillip and Robert. Soon after David Marvel's death, his widow married Moses Daisy [ sic. = Dazy or Dazey]. Sarah (Prettyman) Marvel Daisy [Dazy] died in 1801 in Sussex County, Delaware. A puzzle is that David Marvel named in his will his daughter-in-law Polly Prettyman. The term "daughter-in-law" frequently meant stepdaughter; whichever she was, her origin is obscure. ("Marvels on the Eastern Shore, A Documented Chronology," by Pauline Manning Batchelder). MARVEL, David. Will made 4 Jan 1796. Probated 9 Feb 1796. Beneficiaries: wife, Sally; sons David, Burton, Prettyman; daughters, Elizabeth Marvel, Patience Knowles; daughter-in-law Polly Prettyman. Executors, wife and Robert Marvel. Additional Moses Daizy and wife Sally (late Sally Marvel) 'exhibited on account' of estate 13 Sep 1797 ...after Sally married Moses Daizy, Philip Marvel petitioned the Orphans Court to assure that the minor children received a just income from the property. Betsey, David, and Burton are listed as minors ...(de Valinger, Leon, Jr. Compiled. "Calendar of Sussex County Delaware Probate Records 1680-1800". Page 103. Public Archives Commission, Dover, DE 1964.) An unsolved puzzle is that of the wife of David Marvel. Jones and Burwell state that she was Sarah Prettyman.

It is true that David Marvel's will refers to his wife Sally, and Thomas Prettyman's will names his daughter Sarah Marvel. But in the records of Lewis and Coolspring Presbyterin Church, Lewes, Delaware, list the marriage of David Marvel and Sarah Prettyman in 1789. If the record refers to this David, Sarah had to be a second wife and not the mother of the older children, Prudence, Patience, and Prettyman, who were grown by 1789. David had three younger children, referred to as such in will -- Elizabeth, David, and Burton -- who were probably children by his second wife, Sarah; records of St. George's Church, Indian River, state that Betsy, daughter of David and Sarah Marvel, was born 25 October 1789.

In 1803-04, David and Burton Marvel were listed in the Sussex Co. tax list with a guardian, Eli Pepper, so they were still under age at that time. (Janet Wilkins, Sussex County, Delaware, 1804 Tax Assessment Records, 1992, p. 46). Perhaps Sarah had died by 1803. After David's death the widow Sarah married Moses Dazey (DeVlinger, Sussex County, Delaware, Probate Records, p. 267), and they had a son Prettyman Marvel Dazey, 5 December 1797 (Wright, Vital Records of Kent and Sussex County, Delaware, p. 158).

Levin Wilson, the first historian of the Knowles and Marvel families, stated that David's wife was Comfort Prettyman. She was Wilson's great-grandmother; his grandfather, James Knowles, was still alive when he was growing up, so his information could have been reliable. Wilson did not know of the existence of the three younger children, calling Prettyman his only son.

Birth date for David as 1729. (Davis, Maryln Jean. "Marvel Family and Adjoining Lines"., 1982.) 1756 16 Mar David Marvel sold to Joseph Rawle his 100 acres of Hardship and Gladstones Adventure. About Thomas Marvel, Sr.

Biography

The Marvel and Wesley Family Tree Says:[1]

ID: I50

Name: Thomas M. MARVEL

Sex: M

Death: 1757 in Maryland [Note: Other sources say 1753]

Note: Thomas Marvel, born 1682, married Elizabeth Huggins on 16 January 1720 in Stepney Parish, Wicomico County, Maryland. Elizabeth was born in 1684 [sic = new research suggests her birth was after 1698] in Somerset County, Maryland, daughter of Edmund and Ann (Covington) Huggins. [2]

Father: John MARVELL b: 4 AUG 1632 in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, England

Mother: Ann WEST b: 1632 in Accomack County, Virginia

Since the will of father: John Marvel III left to his son, Thomas Marvel, one 'heaffer' we can conclude that all possessions accumulated by Thomas during his lifetime came to him by his efforts and not from any inheritance. Land transactions recorded at the Hall of Records in Dover, Maryland [sic=Dover, Delaware], show Thomas Marvel had amassed quite an estate.

The will of Thomas Marvel III, dated 20 March 1753, named his sons: David, Thomas IV, Philip I and Robert III. He left to Robert, the plantation of 150 acres and the dwelling on it, in return for the care given the father, Thomas, in his old age. Since the daughters are not mentioned in the will it is presumed they had either died or had married and were sufficiently secure, not to be in need of an inheritance. At this time it was customary that the sons inherit their father's estate unless a daughter was in need.

Thomas Marvel, younger son of John and Ann (West) Marvel, was born about 1682 in Worcester County, Maryland. He married Elizabeth Huggins of Somerset County, Maryland, June 16, 1721, and they had six children:

Abigail Marvel, born April 5, 1723

Viley Clear Marvel, born December 14, 1726

David Marvel, born January 5, 1729

Thomas Marvel, Jr., born November 11, 1732

Philip Marvel, born November 30, 1735

Robert Marvel, born May 15, 1737.

NOTE: Worcester County MD was formed in 1742 and about 25% of old Somerset County was awarded to Sussex County, Delaware, by the surveying of the Mason-Dixon line in about 1767. The Marvel plantation changed county lines three times, ending in Sussex Co., Delaware, after 1762. Hence some confusion - but the land's location remained the same.[3]

The Will of Thomas Marvel was dated March 28,1753, naming his four sons, David, Thomas, Phillip and Robert; and leaving his plantation of 150 acres to his youngest son, Robert Marvel, in return for the care of his father in his old age. Since the daughters are not mentioned in his will, it may be presumed that they had died, or perhaps married and were sufficiently taken care of. At this time, it was customary for sons to inherit their father's estate.[4]

1721 June 16: Thomas MARVILL married Elizabeth HUGINS [HUGGINS] in Stepney Parish, Somerset Co., MD.[5] Earlier histories say she was the daughter of Edmund and Ann [Covington] Huggins, and although I haven't found any proof of this, it is plausible, because Edmund was the only Huggins appearing in the records in the right area. He had owned land on the north side of Wetipquin Creek, and in 1718 he bought land on the Nanticoke River a few miles north of where Marvill would soon settle. [6] Thomas Marvill purchased two tracts of land on the Nanticoke River on the site of the present little village of Riverton, once known as Bacon Quarter, in Somerset (now Wicomico) Co., MD.

1723 Dec. 6: Thomas Marvel purchased a tract of 150 acres called "Gladstone Adventure" from Lewis and Elizabeth Rigby of Somerset County, Maryland. (Somerset Co. L.R., Book GH, p.108-10); and1725 July 14 Thomas acquired an adjoining tract of 200 acres called "Hardship" from William and Elizabeth Phillipson. [7] For proof of the location of these tracts, see Somerset Co. L.R. Book LW-4, p. 341-2, 11 Jan 1849. The land at this spot is high, by local standards, and very sandy, with a lovely outlook across the Nanticoke River.

1753 Mar. 20: Thomas Marvill executed two deeds of gift, in which he divided his personal property and his real estate among his family. To sons David, Thomas, and Philip he gave personal effects and livestock, and to Job Gastineau (relationship not stated) he gave a mare. David received 100 acres of land "in the middle of the tract"; Thomas received 100 acres, "the back part of the tract"; Philip did not get any land. Robert Marvil, in exchange for caring for his fatherfor the rest of his life, received the largest portion of personalty and the dwelling plantation with 150 acres of land belonging thereto. George Lewis Gastineau (a schoolmaster and father of Job) was a witness to the two deeds. [8]

1753 Mar. 28: The will of Thomas Marvel was dated March 28, 1753, naming his four sons, and leaving his plantation of 150 acres to his youngest son, Robert Marvel, in return for the care of his father in his old age. [9]

About John Marvel, I

Biography

Knoche Family Plus Tree says:

"When John Marvel immigrated to America he settled in Accomac County,Virginia. Records show he was born 4 August 1632 in Melbourne, Cambridgeshire, England. ('shire' in England is somewhat the same as'county' in America.). In the book "Early Virginia Immigrants 1632 to 1666" by George Greer, is found the name of John Marvel. Another book found in the Accomac Library the following notation reads, "May 10, 1652, Charles Scarburgh, son of Col. Edmund Scarburgh, 3050 acres in Northampton County, Virginia, transfer of 61 persons from England." John Marvel's name was on this list of persons brought over by Charles Scarburgh. In the early Colonial times a man could earn much land in America by transporting people from England to America. The King of England, then King George II, wanted to get the continent settled but did not want to invest any money to do so. The payment in land, on the continent itself, for the people's transportation was the cheapest and fastest way to do this. John Marvel, entered land in the registry in 1652 and again in 1653. The land registry was made in Northampton County, where the land office was located. Accomac County is next to Northampton County and was made a separate county in 1663. Remember that at this time Virginia's boundary lines were very questionable. Virginia contained all the land that was later divided into the states of Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania, also portions of other surrounding states. John, was married in 1663 to Ann West, daughter of Jonathan and Catherine West. Ann was born in 1632 but it is not known where. The records in Virginia show that Ann died in 1710. This date is questioned because in John's will, dated 1707 he mentions his housekeeper, Matilda West (possibly a relative of Ann), but no mention of his wife Ann. The date of 1710 is likely the date Ann's will was probated which sometimes took several years. ++++++++++++++++++++++ The Marvels settled in the parishes of Melbourne, Meldreth and Shepreth in Cambridgeshire where they resided for centuries. John Marvel was born in the parish of Melbourne on May 27, 1630. He was a son of Thomas Marvel who was born in the same parish in 1594. John, the original emigrant to America, sailed with a number of young men for the district of Virginia (and possibly Maryland) in 1661. Later decendants of Robert Marvel and John Marvel state they were known in Virginia/Maryland for their good wine and fast horses.

Original immigrant. John sailed with a number of young men of the district for Virginia in 1661 (1) John Marvel appears to have been the first person of this family in America. His name was included in a list of 61 persons transferred from England to Charles Scarburg of Northampton County, Virginia, who on May 10, 1652, was granted 3.050 acres of land in that county. Early records show several different spellings of the name: Marvel, Marvil, Marvell, Maruell. John Marvel married Ann West, daughter of Jonathan and Catherine ? West, in 1663, and they had two sons, Thomas Marvel and John Marvel, Jr.

On May 15, 1680's, John Marvel, Sr., entered into an agreement whereby he gave and bequeathed his son, John Marvel, Jr., to William Jarman to be educated and employed at his discretion until he reached the age of twenty-one. In consideration therefore Jarman was to give and grant John Marvel, Jr., 100 acres of land.

Later, on October 14, 1695, John Marvel, Jr., deeded to his "mother and father, lifetime.

John Marvel appeared in the Accomack County tax list in 1669 and continued to appear in other lists. John Marvel, Sr., died in 1707 and the files indicate that he was seventy-five years of age which would mean that he was born in 1632. His will mentioned Thomas Marvel (apparently his son), Jonathan West, Mrs. Catherine West, and Mrs. Mathilda West, who was named executrix. Mrs. Mathilda West was the daughter of Colonel Edmond and Mary Scarburg and the widow of John West.

It lists him as 75 years old and names only one descendant, Thomas Marvel. It also names Jonathan West, Mrs. Catherine West and Mrs. Matilda West. Catherine West was the name of his mother-in-law. It is highly unlikely that Ann's mother would be alive at this age because Ann's age on this date would have been 75. Records have been found stating that Mrs. Matilda West was the daughter of Col. Edmond and Mary (Scarburg) West. She was also the widow of John West, who she married in 1655. John West died in 1703. There is a strong possibility that she was Ann's sister- in-law. She was named executrix of John Marvel III's will. •_TMPLT: •FIELD: •Name: Page •VALUE: Deborah (Marvel) Wesley <dewesley@familytreemail.com> RootsWeb: "The Marvel and Wesley Family Tree" 1 •Death: 29 JUL 1707 in Somerset County, Maryland •_TMPLT: •FIELD: •Name: Page •VALUE: Deborah (Marvel) Wesley <dewesley@familytreemail.com> RootsWeb: "The Marvel and Wesley Family Tree" 1

Marvel History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The Atlantic Ocean to the north and west and the English Channel to the south borders Cornwall, the homeland to the Marvel family name. Even though the usage of surnames was common during the Middle Ages, all English people were known only by a single name in early times. The manner in which hereditary surnames arose is interesting. Local surnames are derived from where the original bearer lived, was born, or held land. The Marvel family originally lived in Cornwall, in the village of Merryfield.

Early Origins of the Marvel Family

The surname Marvel was first found in Cornwall and Devon, where this prominent family flourished. Walter Merifild was recorded in Devon in 1200 but it is believed the family had established itself earlier in St. Columb, Cornwall.

"Towards the conclusion of the fifteenth century, [Tacabre, Cornwall] was seized by Richard III. as having been the property of the Duchess of Exeter, the sister of Edward IV. Some time after this it acquired the name of Merrifield, by which appellation it is still known; but from whence this name is derived, cannot be ascertained. It is conjectured to be a corruption of Mary-field, probably from its belonging to the convent of St. Mary de Graces. This manor is of considerable dimensions, extending into the parishes of Whitstone, Tamerton, and St. Stephens near Launceston in Cornwall, and into the parish of Sourton in Devonshire. Connected with this manor of Merrifield is the barton of Tacabre, which still retains its primitive name."

Marvel Spelling Variations

Cornish surnames are characterized by a multitude of spelling variations. The frequent changes in surnames are due to the fact that the Old and Middle English languages lacked definite spelling rules. The official court languages, which were Latin and French, were also influential on the spelling of a surname. Since the spelling of surnames was rarely consistent in medieval times, and scribes and church officials recorded names as they sounded rather than adhering to any specific spelling rules, it was common to find the same individual referred to with different spellings of their surname in the ancient chronicles. Moreover, a large number of foreign names were brought into England, which accelerated and accentuated the alterations to the spelling of various surnames. Lastly, spelling variations often resulted from the linguistic differences between the people of Cornwall and the rest of England. The Cornish spoke a unique Brythonic Celtic language which was first recorded in written documents during the 10th century. However, they became increasingly Anglicized, and Cornish became extinct as a spoken language in 1777, although it has been revived by Cornish patriots in the modern era. The name has been spelled Merrifield, Merrifild, Merefield, Merrefield, Merrifeild, Merefeild, Maryfield, Meryfield, Meryfeld, Merryfield, Merrivale, Merivale, Marrivale, Merevale, Meervale, Merrivall, Merryvall and many more.
