About Elizabeth Cartwright
Elizabeth Cartwright was born in Surry County, VA and was the daughter of Robert Cartwright and Elizabeth Orchard. Her father's Will of 1675 named William Carpenter of Surry County, VA as her guardian. She married William Rogers by 1686, for in 1686 William Rogers gave receipt to executor Hezekiah Bunnell for Elizabeth's estate which she had inherited from her father.
Robert Cartwright, father, was a servant when he sailed from Bristol, England to VA in 1654. In 1665 he and Richard Cartwright were headrights for Thomas Allen for a patent of 1000 Acres in Lawnes Creek Parish in Surry County. He made a nuncupative will 19 Feb 1675, naming his four children and his brother Richard, and appointing guardians for the children: probate was opened 24 Mar 1676 in Surry County, VA. Robert Cartwright and his wife Elizabeth Orchard were parents of these children:
Robert
Elizabeth married William Rogers
Mary married William Coker
Hezekiah (1671 Surry Co VA)
Will of William Rogers dated January 28, 1725, probated in Surry County, Virginia, on May 17, 1727. "Lancasters of Trigg County" by Jeannie Lancaster. In Order Book 1, Page 530, in Surry County, Virginia is recorded:
On January 6, 1679, Hezekial Bunnill gave bond for the estate of Elizabeth Cartwright, and on September 7, 1686, William Rogers, having married Elizabeth Cartwright, orphan, receipted Mr. Bunnill for his wife's estate. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Cartwright. She is mentioned in his will dated February 19, 1767, and probated in Surry County, Virginia, on April 10, 1676.
Robert CARTWRIGHT died in Southward parish, Surry Co., Va., in September 1676. His will mentions his brother Richard Cartwright. He leaves:
a. to Hezekiah Bunnill a razor and hone.
b. to his eldest daughter, Elizabeth Cartwright, a wedding ring, a Great Bible, a steer given her by John Orchard, a steer given her by Richard Cartwright, and a breeding sow given her by Joan Bunnill.
c. leaves all his lands to his son, Robert Cartwright,
d. leaves the rest of his estate to his three children;
1. William Carpenter to have the tuition of his son,
2. Hezekiah Bunnill, that of his daughter, Elizabeth.
3. Richard Cartwright that of his daughter, Mary.
The testators were Benjamin Harrison and John Orchard.
The inventory of Robert Cartwright taken November 10, 1676 by Nathaniel Knight and William Norwood was sworn to by Benjamin Harrison, the executor on June 15, 1787. Benjamin Harrison's account of Robert Cartwright's estate on September 2, 1769, shows the following suggestive payments: "to both their funerals"; "to ye digging 2 graves"; "to pd. Wm. Carpinder to discharge ye Orpht Chivers from ye Est."; as well as payments to Hezekiah Bunnill, Richard Cartwright and William Carpinder of the final division of the personal property to the three orphans.
Of the three Cartwright children, the eldest daughter, Elizabeth, was under the guardianship of Hezekiah Bunnill, who on Nov. 4, 1679, presented Walter Flood and Richard Avery as securities for her estate.

About Robert Cartwright
Robert Cartwright came to Virginia between 1654 and 1663 from Bristol, England to Virginia. In records dated April 13, 1664, in Surry County, VA, Robert was listed as carpenter.
In a grant to Arthur Allen dated Aug. 24, 1665, land in the amount of 1000 acres in Surry County, VA, was claimed for the importation of Richard Cartwright and Robert Cartwright (Nugent, pg. 485).
The first appearance of Robert in the Surry Co., Va., records was on April 13, 1664, when Robert, carpenter, gave bond to Thomas Flood and Mr. Benjamin Harrison in the sum of 5000 lbs. of tobacco for Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Chivers, dec'd., the condition being that he shall pay them a mare three years old for the use of Elizabeth Chivers when she comes of age (D & W 1645-1671, p. 234).
The bond was witnessed by Samuel Coop and Thomas Salter, was acknowledge May 3, 1664, and was recorded May 10, 1664. This indicates, along with the account of Robert's estate after his death, that he had married the widow of Thomas Chivers, who may have been named Elizabeth, as she had a daughter Elizabeth Chivers, as well as one named Elizabeth Cartwright.
Robert was on juries in Surry Co. on July 7, 1664; September 7, 1665; and July 16, 1669 according to Surry Co., Va., Deeds & Wills 1645-1671, pp. 243, 261, and 345. He was security for John Rogers for goods bought at Creed's sale in 1668. On June 24, 1669, he was also a witness to a deed made by Robert Burgess and security along with William Newitt to Hezekiah Bunnill on January 7, 1672 for the estate of John Flood's orphan.
Robert died in Southward parish, Surry Co., Va., in September 1676.

Family Motto:
"Defend The Fold"
Cartwright History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms
The Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain were the first to use the name of Cartwright. The name had a practical origin since it came from when its initial bearer worked as a maker of carts, and wheels. The name has its origins in the Old English word craet, which means cart, and the Old English word wyrtha, which means wright or maker, thereby denoting one who was the maker of carts or wagons.
The name could also have been "from Cauterêts; a location name in Normandy Cateray in Roll of Battell Abbey. De Ceterith, a tenant in chief in the Domesday Book. "
Another source notes the family is "armorially identified with Cateryke, or Catherick (Robson). Catherick was part of the demesne of the Earls of Richmond, and the surname therefore probably arose from tenure of the office of Seneschal by a branch of a neighbouring family. The arms (a fesse) are those of the adjoining family of De Smythton or Eschalers, with three cinquefoils for difference, which were afterwards corrupted into ‘roses', 'Catherine wheels', and ‘fire-balls with rays.’ Of this family Ilbert de Catherege, or Catherage (a form of Catheric), occurs in Normandy, 1180-98 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); which shows the Norman origin of the family. A branch long remained at Stanwick, in Richmondshire, close to Catterick. Another branch was seated in Notts, and one in Cambridge; and the name there changed from Cateryke to Cartwright."
Early Origins of the Cartwright Family
The surname Cartwright was first found in Yorkshire where early rolls listed the name as a profession and a surname. The Poll Tax of Howdenshire (East Riding of Yorkshire) listed Robert le Cartwright. B. Johannes Toppe, cartwryght. In the same year the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls listed: Magota Cartwryght; Henriciis Wryght, catrwryght (sic); Johannes Warde, cartwright; Johannes Percivale, cartwryght and Geoffrey Cartwright.
Cartwright Spelling Variations
Until quite recently, the English language has lacked a definite system of spelling rules. Consequently, Anglo-Saxon surnames are characterized by a multitude of spelling variations. Changes in Anglo-Saxon names were influenced by the evolution of the English language, as it incorporated elements of French, Latin, and other languages. Although Medieval scribes and church officials recorded names as they sounded, so it is common to find one person referred to by several different spellings of his surname, even the most literate people varied the spelling of their own names. Variations of the name Cartwright include Cartwright, Cartright, Cartwrite, Carthright, Kartwright, Kartright, Cartrite, Kartwrite, Chartwright, Cartrite, Catherick, Cartrait, Cartray, Ceterith, Cateray, Cautheret, Carterwright, Carterright, Carterrite, Chartright, Chartwright, Cardwright and many more.
