About John Leavitt

John Leavitt Sr. migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Biography

John Leavitt (Levet, Levett), a tailor by trade, was born in 1608 (based on his headstone). His Great Migration bio says by 1612, based on his first marriage.

John's English ancestry is unknown. Neither his place of birth, nor his parents have been identified.

A previous version of this profile, citing only an unsourced online family tree, claimed parents Percival Levett and Margaret Linkley. They have been detached. Please use G2G to discuss evidence for his origins. Thank you.

John was first known to be in Massachusetts in September 1634 when he was granted land in Dorchester. He was given more land in 1635. By 1636 relocated to Hingham, selling some if not all of his Dorchester property to "Mr. Makepeace." He was admitted as a freeman at Hingham, Massachusetts on March 3, 1636.

John Leavitt of Hingham, Massachusetts was certainly the first by this name to settle in America and to bequeath American soil to his progeny. Authors disagree as to the year of his arrival and the name of the ship he sailed on. Names of four different ships are given by as many authors. The most likely account is provided by "The History of Ancient Woodbury, Conn." which states: "John Leavitt came to New England and settled in Dorchester in 1628." This information was very likely given to the author by immediate descendants of John who were early settlers in this part of the State. The Dudley genealogy states: "John ran away from an apprenticeship at the age of 19." All early authors and family tradition agree on this assertion. If still an apprentice he would have to have been under the age of 21 as apprentices were freed of their commitment at age 21. So being born in 1608, he would have reached the age of 19 in 1629. This makes it very likely 1628 was the year he arrived in America.

As an apprentice John learned the trade of tailoring and went into business in Dorchester. After he became possessed of some property in Dorchester his Master learned of his whereabouts, came overseas and took from him his possessions, as by law he was entitled to do. "History of Rockingham County, N.H." states: "His master came from England and took away his little property in Dorchester so Deacon John went to Hampton and Exeter N.H. for a time". This statement has possibilities. It may be the reason for five of his sons settling in and near Exeter. It may be where he found his first wife, supposed to be a Mary "Lovet," whom he married in 1637. Perhaps Mary was not a Lovet until after her marriage to John and an error was simply repeated time after time. It is also possible she was the sister of Thomas who lived in Exeter before moving to Hampton. The Thomas branch early on spelled their last name in various ways, mostly Lovet, but also Lovatt, Levett and Leuit. In early days the letters "o" and "e" were similar and often confused.

In Hingham John Leavitt was deputy to the general court, 1656-64; selectman, 1661-63-65-68-72-74-75; and deacon of the church.

In Hingham John received multiple land grants, including his house lot of six acres. John spent the rest of his life buying and selling property.

The name of John's first wife is unknown. They married in Hingham by 1637 and had six children. She died and was buried in July of 1646. Anderson of the Great Migration biography does not see any evidence that she was the Mary Lovett who was admitted to the Dorchester church in 1638 as John had been in Hingham for two years.

Six month after his first wife's death, John remarried on December 16, 1646. He had five small children who needed a mother. His second wife was Sarah, whose maiden name is unknown. She is believed to have been Sarah Gilman, daughter of Edward Gilman, but there is no proof. The close association of John Leavitt and Daniel Cushing of Hingham and husband of Lydia Gilman. John and Sarah would have a further eight children.

On 30 November 1689, John Leavitt wrote his extensive will. He died before 27 Jan 1691/2 when it was proved. His will is complicated, but he divided his estate between his nine surviving children. His wife Sarah to have all his property until her death. His children John, Elizabeth and Jeremiah died before him.

Sarah Leavitt died 26 May 1700.

Children by his first wife were:

John

Hannah born 1639

Samuel

April born 1641 and removed to Exeter, New Hampshire

Jeremiah baptized March 1, 1645-46

Children by his second wife were:

Israel baptized April 23, 1648

Josiah born May 4, 1653

Nehemiah born January 22, 1655-56

Sarah born February 25, 1658-59

In 1623, Captain Christo pher Levett sailed to New England and explored the coast of Maine. In 1630, he went again to New England, and the following year, died at sea.

Percival Levett (1560–1625) was an early merchant and innkeeper of York, England, Sheriff of the city,[1] member of the Eastland Company and father of English explorer Capt. Christopher Levett.

Levett was born in Harewood, Yorkshire, and removed early to the city of York, where he was listed as a freeman in 1581, and where he served the city as chamberlain and subsequently Sheriff in 1597.[2] His daughter Ann married another York Sheriff, Christopher Topham (father of Member of Parliament Christopher Topham), and on his death married Dr. Joseph Micklethwaite.[3][4]

The ancestors of Percival Levett came from Bolton Percy, Yorkshire, and they shared a coat-of-arms with the Levetts of Normanton,[5] High Melton and Hooton Levitt, Yorkshire, indicating that a cadet branch of the family probably relocated to Bolton Percy during medieval times.[6]

Levett was a contributor from York to the Queen's Loan in 1590.[7] He was a member of the Eastland Company,[8] an English company established in the sixteenth century in an attempt to wrest Baltic trade from the Hanseatic League.

Percival Levett was buried at St. Martin's Micklegate in York on 13 February 1625.[9] Levett had done well enough as a merchant to acquire the title of gentleman, a title he assuredly was born without,[10] and sold his home in Coppergate, in central York, to Matthew Hutton, Archbishop of York.[11] Levett's sons, aside from Capt. Christopher the explorer, also became merchants, including his son Percival, a merchant at Beverley and York.[12][13] Percival Levett's brother Richard Levett was a long-serving mayor of Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Leavitt History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

Leavitt Name Meaning (of Norman origin) nickname from Anglo-Norman French leuet ‘wolf cub’ (see Low 3). habitational name from any of the various places in Normandy called Livet. All are of obscure, presumably Gaulish, etymology. from the Middle English personal name Lefget, Old English Leofgeat, composed of the elements leof ‘dear’, ‘beloved’ + the tribal name Geat (see Jocelyn). possibly from an unrecorded Middle English survival of the Old English female personal name Leofg¯ð, composed of the elements leof ‘dear’, ‘beloved’ + g¯ð ‘battle’.

Early Origins of the Leavitt Family

The surname Leavitt was first found in Suffolk where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. William Levett (ca.1200–ca.1270) was lord of the manor of the South Yorkshire village of Hooton Levitt. After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, having prevailed over King Harold, granted most of Britain to his many victorious Barons. It was not uncommon to find a Baron, or a Bishop, with 60 or more Lordships scattered throughout the country. These he gave to his sons, nephews and other junior lines of his family and they became known as under-tenants. They adopted the Norman system of surnames which identified the under-tenant with his holdings so as to distinguish him from the senior stem of the family. After many rebellious wars between his Barons, Duke William, commissioned a census of all England to determine in 1086, settling once and for all, who held which land. He called the census the Domesday Book, indicating that those holders registered would hold the land until the end of time. Hence, conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Leuiet, held by a Norman noble who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086.
