About Catharina Isaacse Hegeman

{{{image-caption}}}

Catharina Hegeman was a New Netherland Descendant 1674-1776.

Catharina Hegeman, wife of Theunis Bogaert, was a daughter not of Joseph2 Hegeman (as stated in K.Co. 138), but of his brother Isaac2.

Catharina Hegeman, born say 1692 at Oostwoudt (i.e. New Lots), presumably died by 2 June 1767 as she is not named in her husband’s will. She was betrothed 20 October 1711 in the Flatbush Dutch Church, to Theunis Gysbertse Bogaert, of Brooklyn, born 1689 at Brooklyn, died between 2 June 1767 (when he made his will) and 27 April 1768 (when it was proved).[39] They lived at Fresh Kills, near Port Richmond, Staaten Island. There was issue.[40]

About Isaac Adriaensen Hegeman

The Prince's Flag.

Isaac Hegeman was a New Netherland settler.

Isaac Hegeman, of New Lots and Jamaica, L.I., born say 1667 in New Netherland, alive in 1718. He (then of Flatbush) was betrothed 15 February 1687 in the Flatbush Dutch Church, to Marritje/Marike Roelofse Schenck, born 14 February 1667, who as “Marritje Rulofs” was received into the membership of the Flatbush Dutch Church on 21 March 1684. In the 1698 census his household consisted of 1 man, 1 woman, 3 children, and no apprentices or slaves. He was clearly the father of the known sisters Neeltje and Catharina Hegeman — both of whom named children Isaac and Maria — despite the fact that Bergen assigns them to his brother Joseph. Moreover, “Isaak Hegeman” served as baptismal sponsor to his namesake Isaak, son of Teunis Bogaart and Catharina Hegeman, on 2 November 1718 in the Dutch Church of Port Richmond, Staten Island.

Known issue:

Adriaen Hegeman, baptized 9 September 1688 in the Flatbush Dutch Church, with sponsors Roelef Martensen and Lijsbet Heeghman. Although in previous versions of these notes we tentatively accepted Bergen’s statement that this Adriaen Hegeman was the one who married Martha van der Beeck, it has since been determined that this Martha’s husband was actually a son of Abram2 (Adriaen1) Hegeman. It may be doubted whether the present Adriaen ever reached adulthood, for he did not appear as a baptismal sponsor to any of the children of his sister Catharina or Neeltje, below.

Neeltje Hegeman, born say 1697 at New Lots (according to her marriage record). She married 19 September 1716 in the Flatbush Dutch Church, Coert [Gerritse] van Voorhees, of Jamaica and Gravesend, died between 3 January 1746 (when he made his will) and 24 July 1750 (when it was proved).[41] In 1723, “Koert Van Voorhees” served as a baptismal sponsor in the Dutch Church of Port Richmond, Staten Island, for a child of Teunis Bogaert and Neeltje’s sister Catharina Hegeman, and Voorhees appoints as one of the executors of his will “my brother-in-law Teunis Bogart.”

About Adriaen Hendricksen Hegeman

The Prince's Flag.

Adriaen Hegeman was a New Netherland settler.

FIRST MAYOR OF FIVE VILLAGES-LONG ISLAND, N.Y.

Adrian (Adriaen) Hegeman was born in Elburg, Holland in 1625. He was raised and educated in Vorchten, Holland, where his father was a minister at the Vorchten Dutch Reformed Church. Shortly after his father died in 1637, Adrian was sent to Elburg to apprentice as a silk weaver. He married Catharina Margetts in Sloten, Amsterdam on March 7, 1649. He emigrated to New Amsterdam (New York City) in 1652 from Elburg, Holland; where he was working as a silk weaver on Egelantier Street. He helped settle Flatbush (Midwout) Kings County, Long Island, NY. Adrian Hegeman, during his lifetime, acquired more than 350 acres of land and became the largest property owner in the Village of Flatbush. He also helped to establish the Old Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church and School. Adrian served as the first "shout" or Mayor of the five villages which would eventually become Brooklyn. A bronze plaque honoring him as a teacher is attached to Erasmus Hall High School in the general area of where the old school once stood. Erasmus Hall High School is located across the street from the church and cemetery on Flatbush Ave. A public elementary school is named in his honor as well. The bronze plaque reads at Erasmus Hall High School reads:

1659-1671

Adrian "Adriaen" Hegeman was the son of Rev. Hendrick "Henrick" Hegaman (1595-1637) and Martigen Van Marle. Rev. Hendrick "Henrick" Hegeman was born in Elburg, Holland. He was educated at the University of Franeker in Holland in 1617 and served as the minister of the Vorchten Dutch Reformed Church from 1624 until his death in 1637. Shortly after Hendrick's death, his widow remarried the new minister of the church and young Adrian was sent to Elburg to live with relatives on Egalantier Street. In addition to his early schooling, Adrian was trained as a silk weaver. The trade was passed down through successive generations. Adrian Hegeman was the grandson of Jacob Hegeman (1575-1625) from Harderwijk, Holland (1575-1625) and Antigen Feith. Adrian was the great-grandson of Lambert Hegeman (1545-1611) from Harderwijk, Holland. Hr later moved tp Elburg, Holland. Lambert Hegeman was the brother of Colonel Wolter Hegeman, the hero of the Seige of Bronkhorst. He died after being shot by a deserter during the seige in 1578. Colonel Hegeman was a very conspicuous soldier. It is written that his name and the rumor of his arrival terrified the enemy. At Deventer he captured the works that defended the bridge and destroyed it. He retook the town of Anhalt and the castle of Hattem. Adrian Hegeman was the great-great-grandson of Hon. Jacob Hegeman (1520-1570) from Harderwijk, Holland who was an alderman as well as the Burgomaster (Mayor) of Harderwijk, Holland. Elsgen Cornelisse was his great-great grandmother. The earliest historical record of the Hegeman family relates: Duke Willem Van Gelder, in 1402, bequeathed to Jan Hegeman an annuity of fifty gold guilders. Some of the early Harderwijck Hegemans wrote their names Hegheman, Heegman, and Heegeman. Much of the genealogical and historical information is from: The Genealogy Page of John Blythe Dobson. see also: http://heathersgen.blogspot.com/2012/02/adriaen-hagaman-1624-1672.html

Dutch Reformed Church of Vorchten, Kerkweg 17

A beech village church, consisting of a probably 13th century ship that was rebuilt in the 19th century, with a three-sided closed higher choir. The choir is late Gothic and has rib vaults. It is partially covered with tuff. In the church a renaissance pulpit from 1630. The tower was built around 1200 and is covered with tuff.

The tower and the narrow side space on both sides together form a so-called reduced westwork. In the tower a bell from 1641, cast by Hendryck ter Horst from Deventer.

The oldest part of the church dates from before the year 900 and is made of tuff, so not yet of brick. It is also on a mound (that may sound familiar to Frisians) and therefore dates from before the dike. a more than eleven hundred years old, still existing and functioning church in the Netherlands.
