About Elizabeth Huggins
Biography
Elizabeth Huggins was born in about 1695-1700 in Nanticoke Hundred, Somerset County, in the English province of Maryland. The most-recent research states that she was the daughter of Edmund Huggins and his 2nd wife, Anne (Covington) Huggins. Although this remains unproven by primary documents, most of which have not survived; it is likely, because Edmund was the only man named Huggins appearing in contemporary records in that area. He originally owned land on the north side of Wetipquin Creek, Somerset Co., Maryland. Nehemiah Covington, Anne's father, had a nearby plantation. Widower Edmund Huggins married Anne in the late 1690s (but no records have survived). [1]
In 1718 Edmund Huggins bought land further north, on the upper Nanticoke River a few miles above where Thomas Marvel, b. 1684, would soon settle. Thus, Thomas Marvel and Edmund & Anne (Covington) Huggins were neighboring planters. [2]
Elizabeth and Thomas Marvel were married on June 21, 1720 in Stepney Parish, Somerset Co., Maryland.[3] They had the following 7 children:
David Marvel b: 05 JAN 1721 in Somerset County, MD
Abigail Marvel b: 05 APR 1723 in Wicomico County, MD
Viley Clear Marvel b: 14 DEC 1726 in Somerset County, MD
Thomas Marvel b: 11 NOV 1732 in Somerset Co., MD
Phillip P Marvel b: 30 NOV 1735 in Somerset County, MD
Robert Marvel b: 15 MAY 1737 in Somerset County, MD
Joseph Marvel b: About 1739 in Worcester County, MD
Elizabeth (Huggins) Marvel died in about 1755 in Somerset County, Maryland, on land that became part of Sussex County, Delaware, when the Mason-Dixon survey established firm local boundaries in 1765-1767. She is buried at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Georgetown, Sussex County, Delaware.[4]

Before 1688 would be too early as she would have been over 50.

About Edmund Huggins
Biography
Edmund Huggins was from the northwest part of Somerset County, Eastern Shore, Maryland, called Nanticoke Hundred (Hundreds were a sub-division of the large counties in Colonial America). Most of this area was declared to be Sussex County, Delaware, when the Mason-Dixon Line was surveyed in 1765-67. Edmund Huggins' property, especially that which he bought in 1718, was located in what is now Sussex County, Delaware.
Little known of his early life and his parents names are not known. The latest research indicates he probably had 2 wives. First he married Clarissa Ann Cohn (last name spelling is not certain) from the Pamlico River area of North Carolina in about 1680. She died in 1688. Edmund Huggins may even have been born in Bath County, North Carolina; Edmund's son, John Huggins [b: 1680s], lived there in the 18th Century.[1]
Originally it was believed that his daughter Elizabeth Huggins was born of this union in about 1684. However, newer research, based in part on the "near-kin" witnesses to his 1726 will, indicate she was more-likely born between 1698 and 1700, and that her mother was Anne Covington, daughter of Somerset County MD planter, Nehemiah Covington. Edmund Huggins also had 2 sons, Charles and Edmund (Jr.) born in Maryland around 1707 to 1709, thus by Anne Covington. He had an older son, John Huggins, "weaver of Bath Co., NC," probably from his first marriage.[2]
Edmund Huggins is said to have died at home in June 1726. Although no will was filed or proven, an "Inventory of the Estate," was signed on June 16, 1726, by Nehemiah Huggins and Margaret Smith as "near kin". Note the first-name "Nehemiah" as in Anne Covington's father's name.

Huggins History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms
The name Huggins is English but thought to be Norman-French in origin. The name is believed to have come over with the Norman invasion and is considered patronymic, as having been derived from the name Huggin which was a pet or nickname for someone with the Old French given name of Hugh. The translation of Hugh can mean any of the following; hug, mind, spirit, or heart. In England the name Hugh was favored among the French who came after the Norman conquest because of the popularity of St. Hugh.
Early Origins of the Huggins Family
The surname Huggins was first found in Fife, where like its English counterpart, the name is a diminutive of "Hugh" as in "son of Hugh." This is turn, translates in Latin to "Hugo." Hugens was in the Domesday Book as a surname while Hugh, Hugo and Hugolin were personal names.
Taking a rather large step back in time over the centuries, we found Andrew Hugoun, latimus, recorded in 1519, and a few years later, Robert Huggou (perhaps a miscopying of Huggon) in Glasmount in 1540, and John Huggoun had sasine of lands of Neddyr Pitgrugny in 1545.
The earliest record of any variation of the name is that of Robert Hugyn which appears in the Sussex “Pipe Rolls” from 1327. The Pipe Rolls often times called the “Great Rolls” were a series of financial records kept by the English Treasury by order of King Edward III, with the oldest dating back to the 12th century. They hold the distinction of being the oldest consecutive set of records detailing English governance in the United Kingdom. These records span a period of over 700 years and have proven invaluable to researches over the years. Additional records of those bearing any variation of the surname Huggins include, Amisia Hugines which appears in the Worcestershire “Pipe Rolls” from 1327 and John Hugyn which appears in Staffordshire public records of 1337. Public records from the 19th century show Samuel Huggins held the office of President of the Liverpool Architectural Society and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.
