In 1672, William Clemance Sr. sold all of his real estate in Cambridge and Billerica to Daniel Hudson of Lancaster, Mass. with the provision that Hudson maintain Clemance and his wife Ann. Note that Clemmance could well have been a close relative of Daniel Hudson;s wife.

In 1673 Daniel Hudson of Concord sometimes of Lancaster purchased 20 acres of land in Lancaster from John Moore, deeding this tract in the following year when "late of Lancaster but now of Cambridge Village" to his son Daniel "who is about to be married to Mary Maynard, of Sudbury, daughter of John Maynard".

On September 22, 1697, Indians attacked Lancaster, killing at least nineteen people, including Daniel Hudson, his wife, Joanna, two of his daughters, and two grandchildren. Daniel's son Daniel, a direct ancestor of Frederic Hudson, is assumed to have remained in Concord following the 1676 Indian attack. Daniel and Joanna Hudson had eleven children. In the seventh generation, Frederic Hudson was born in Quincy. He had close family ties in Concord. Frederic's three aunts -- Lucy Buttrick (Mrs. Jonas), Matilda Farrar (Mrs. Timothy) and Susan Barrett (Mrs. Samuel) -- lived in Concord. Woodward Hudson was in the eighth generation, Marion Hudson Wilmot (Woodward's daughter) in the ninth. Marion did not have any children. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal ..., Volume 4

By Ellery Bicknell Crane

The Hudson family was represented among the pioneers in New England by James Hudson, of Boston, John Hudson, of Duxbury, Ralph Hudson, of Cambridge, William Hudson, of Boston, and Daniel Hudson, of Lancaster. They intermarried with some of the most influential families, as the historian of Marlboro states the fact, adding that scarcely any other family has furnished so many soldiers in the Indian, French and Revolutionary wars. The relationship between the various pioneer settlers is not known, nor their English pedigrees definitely ascertained.

Daniel Hudson (b. 1620) was slain, along with his wife, Joanna, along with two daughters and two grandchildren in the Lancaster, MA Raid of 1697. One-third of the Town of Lancaster was wiped out in that raid and many people taken captive, including Daniel's two daughters, Joanna and Elizabeth, ages 37 and 40. They were never heard from again. The townspeople made a valiant effort to defend their homes during the raid, but many of them were killed, including the above Hudson family. For more information about this raid by the Indians and several other raids in Lancaster, please see Early Records of Lancaster, MA.

Daniel came to America in 1639/40. He was first seen in Watertown, Massachusetts. A mason by trade he helped build the first school house in Cambridge in 1647. He lived in Watertown, Cambridge, Concord and Lancaster, Massachusetts. He was a soldier in the King Philip War of 1675/76. Daniel , his wife Joanna, daughters Elizabeth and Joanna, and two Grandchildren (children of Nathaniel) were killed in the Indian Massacre of September 11, 1697. He was 80 years old when he was killed.

Daniel Hudson's great uncle Henry Hudson III was a famous English navigator and explorer who died at sea by his men who mutinied against him and 8 other members. The Hudson River and Bay runs mainly in New York were named after him. See Memorial #6621707.

There are 2 birth dates listed for Daniel. 1617 or 1631.

Daniel was by occupation a Mason. He helped build the 1st school house in Cambridge, Mass. in 1647. Daniel was a soldier in the King Philip War of 1675/76.

On September 11, 1697 tragedy struck at noontime in the frontier town of Lancaster, Mass. A surprise attack by Indians killed, captured and wounded about 28 settlers and the destroying of many of the homes in this isolated village before the Indians retreated. Prior, the settlers were asked to come to the nearest fort for protection from possible Indian raids. Most settlers had built their homes and some had faith that their homes would withstand an Indian attack. (A costly error in judgement.) These lives should be remembered or a tribute to those who were killed should not be lost with time. 20 killed/2 wounded/6 captured...totally 28 lives effected by this Indian raid.

The Nipmuc Indians were the major participants in the siege of Lancaster, Mass. Later many of the Indian survivors responsible for the Indian raids in 1675 and 1697 were hunted down, murdered or sold into slavery in the West Indies or forced to leave the area per the Wikipedia Encyclopedia. By the Massachusetts Enfranchisement Act of 1869 effectively "detribalized" the Nipmuc and the last of the remaining Indian plantation lands were sold. But the Nipmuc communities continue to survive and the tribe received State recognition in 1979.

Among those massacred were:

*Daniel Hudson (age 80)

wife Joanna Hudson (nee: White) (age 64)

daughter Joanna Hudson (age 37 - killed in captivity)

daughter Elizabeth Hudson (age 40 - killed in captivity)

2 grandchildren (Seth & Nathaniel who were sons of Nathaniel and Rebecca) suffered death in captivity.

Hudson History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The name Hudson has a rich and ancient history. It is an Anglo-Saxon name that was originally derived from the name Hudd, a pet form of both Hugh and Richard. The surname Hudson features the patronymic suffix -son, which was most common in the north of England and superseded other patronymic suffixes in popularity during the 14th century.

Early Origins of the Hudson Family

The surname Hudson was first found in Yorkshire where one of the first records of the name was John Hudsone, Hutson who was listed in the Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield in 1323.

The Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 list: Johannes Hudson; Johannes Hudeson; and Adam Huddeson.

There are numerous entries for the name further north in Scotland. One of the first on record there was James Hudson, a charter witness in Kelso in 1466. John Hudsone and Willie Hutson were tenants on land of the Abbey of Kelso in 1567.

The castle of Woodcroft in Etton, Northampton was the scene of a rather gruesome event of one of the family. "Castle Woodcroft, is said to have been the scene of the murder of Dr. Hudson, chaplain of Charles I, who was forced over the battlements by the parliamentarian forces stationed here, who, hacking with their swords the hands by which he endeavoured to cling to the walls, caused him to fall into the moat beneath, where he was instantly put to death. The castle has been restored by Earl Fitzwilliam; the tower from which Dr. Hudson was thrown, and the moat in which he was killed, are still entire."

Hudson Spelling Variations

Before English spelling was standardized a few hundred years ago, spelling variations of names were a common occurrence. Elements of Latin, French and other languages became incorporated into English through the Middle Ages, and name spellings changed even among the literate. The variations of the surname Hudson include Hudson, Hutson and others.
