mistaken identity
Robert Beverley's wife has been identified, erroneously, in several works, both old and new, as Katherine (Armistead) (Hone) Beverley. These include Lyon Gardiner Tyler's 1915 Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography and Darrell Rutman's 1984 A Place in Time: Middlesex County Virginia, 1650-1750. She has also been identified by Charles Penrose Keith and others as Judith (Bowles).[2] Other works have guessed correctly that she was a Hone, or have concluded her ancestry is unknown, but these were "without evidence or analysis," according to genealogist, Patricia L. Hatcher.[1]
Genealogists have discussed the meaning of the terms, "sister," and "brother-in-law," in these two wills concerning Col. John Armistead. Remembering that these words did not have the specific meanings of today, and looking at other records, Patricia Hatcher concludes that Katherine Hone, daughter of Theophilus Hone, married twice, 1st to Robert Beverley, and 2nd to Christopher Robinson.
Christopher Robinson wrote in his will of 27 January 1692/3:
I give and bequeath to my loving [brother], Col. John Armestead and to my loving sister, Mrs. Judith Armistead to each of them a ring of twenty shillings value for a remembrance of me." Executors included my loving brother Mr John Robinson my loving brother in law Coll. John Armistead.[1]
Note: The will of Christopher Robinson is in the possession of a descendant, and the meaning of the brackets around the word "brother" is unclear.[1] Possibly difficult to transcribe, Virginia Garber reads, "brother-in-law [italics hers] (p 30).[3]
The 26 August 1686 will of Robert Beverley left his wife, Catherine,
my one half part of the one hundred acres of land and plantation in Gloster Countie, for the whole if I happen to purchase the same before my death, commonly called and knowed by the name the North River Quarter and now held in partnership betwixt my brother Col. John Armistead and myself.[1]
Additional records, including those of Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia were studied by Patricia L. Hatcher in an effort to resolve the question for once and for all. Robert Beverley married on 28 March 1678 to "Mrs. Katherine Hone." Christopher Robinson married on 17 November 1687 to "Mad'm Katherine Beverley." Portions of their respective wills are quoted above.[1] Both Theophilus Hone, the elder and Theophilus the younger were living when Katherine married Robert Beverley, so she could not have been the widow of either of them.[1] Robert Beverley administered the estate of Theophilus Hone, the elder, when he died intestate, (also, Katherine and Robert named a son Theophilus). Clearly, she was the daughter of Theophilus Hone, and not the daughter or sister of John Armistead.
This record from England puts to rest any question. In 1712, John Robinson, Bishop of Bristol, England, submitted testimony to the College of Heralds that his brother, Christopher Robinson, had married, as his second wife, "Katherine, daur: of Theophilus Hone of Jamestown in Virginia, Relict of Major Robert Beverley."[1]
Biography
U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Katherine (Hone) Robinson was a Virginia colonist.
Katharine Hone
Origin
Katherine was born about 1659. Katharine is a daughter of Theophilus Hone, and her mother's name is unknown.[1] She may have been born in Elizabeth City County. Her father was a Burgess representing that county on 25 November 1652.[1]
Parents and Maiden Name Now Resolved
The ancestry of Katherine, wife of 1) Robert Beverley, and 2) Christopher Robinson has previously been unclear. A great deal of the misunderstanding has centered around the wording of two wills which referred to Col. John Armistead and his wife, Judith. Their ancestry is particularly important because two of their descendants were Presidents William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison.
Robert Beverley's wife has been identified, erroneously, in several works, both old and new, as Katherine (Armistead) (Hone) Beverley. Additional records, including those of Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia were studied by Patricia L. Hatcher in an effort to resolve the question for once and for all. Robert Beverley married on 28 March 1678 to "Mrs. Katherine Hone." (Mrs was then a title used for an unmarried woman), and Christopher Robinson married on 17 November 1687 to "Mad'm Katherine Beverley." Portions of their respective wills are quoted above.[1] Both Theophilus Hone, the elder and Theophilus the younger were living when Katherine married Robert Beverley, so she could not have been the widow of either of them.[1] Robert Beverley administered the estate of Theophilus Hone, the elder, when he died intestate, (also, Katherine and Robert named a son Theophilus). John Armistead is clear.
They were "brothers" through their respective marriages to Katherine (Hone) (Beverley) Robinson, and Judith (Hone) Armistead. Katherine (Hone) and Judith (Hone) were sisters. They were both daughters of Theophilus Hone (his mother was named Judith). Katherine married to 1) Maj Robert Beverley, 2) Christopher Robinson, and her sister Judith married to Col John Armistead.[1]
Marriages
Katherine married twice.
She married 28 March 1678[9?] at Gloucester County,[2] as her 1st, and as his 2nd, to
Maj Robert Beverley. They had at least three children.[1] He died 15 March 1686/7.[1][2]
She married 17 November 1687, as her 2nd, and as his 2nd, to Christopher Robinson.[1] They had at least one child per Hatcher,[1]or three children per VMHB.[3]
Katherine was a member of Christ Church, Middlesex County, Virginia and therefore probably married there.[2]

Knowing this, the connections of Robert Beverley and Christopher Robinson to Col. Katherine married to 1) Maj Robert Beverley, 2) Christopher Robinson, and her sister Judith married to Col John Armistead.[1] Family
Robert Beverley's, "The History of Virginia, in four parts," states that Catherine Hone was from James City, Virginia.
A number of unexplored sources state or speculate that Katherine was the widow, not the daughter of Theophilus Hone. Care should be taken to follow up with this potential before continuing with this family line. Other sources that follow Theophilus Hone as husband of Katherine generally state that she was a sister of John Armistead.
Here's just one such example:
The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography
Vol. IV., July, 1896, No. I
"Major Theophilus Hone was a justice of Warwick county in 1652 He afterwards removed to Jamestown was Burgess for James City county in October 1666 and sheriff of James City county 1676 Prior to May 1672 he married the widow of William Richardson In 1675 Theophilus Hone Jr and Thomas Hone had a grant in James City county adjoining the land of Sir John Aytoun There is recorded at Essex Court house a deed dated Rappahannock county November 2 1686 from Christopher Wormeley Esq to Malachy Peale of Stafford conveying land which was granted to Thomas Hopkins in 1654 escheated and afterwards granted to Thomas Hopkins Hone gent by him conveyed to Justinian Aylmer and by Aylmer to his wife Frances now the wife of Christopher Wormeley In a pedigree of a family of Hone in the Visitation of Essex 1634 Hdrl Soc page 423 it is stated that Thomas Hone of Farnham 1634 married Judith daughter of Theophilus Aylmer Archdeacon of London and had issue William Thomas Theophilus Edward and Elizabeth all alive 1634 It can hardly be doubted that this was the family of the Hones of Virginia It has been stated that the second wife of Major Robert Beverley of Middlesex was Catherine daughter of Theophilus Hone but as the parish register states that he and Madam Katherine Hone were married in Gloster March 28 1689 [1689 is a misprint in the VMHB Article, the actual year was 1679 and was recorded in the Christ Church Parish Register, Middlesex County, Virginia which is attached to the marriage of Robert and Katherine in this database] it is probable that she was Major Hone's widow and as Beverley in his will speaks of his brother in law Colonel John Armistead of Gloucester it is probable she was an Armistead."

t Major Theophilus Hone was a justice of Warwick county in 1652. He afterwards removed to Jamestown, was Burgess for James City county in October, 1666, and sheriff of James City county 1676. Prior to May, 1672, he married the widow of William Richardson. In 1675 Theophilus Hone, Jr., and Thomas Hone had a grant in James City county, adjoining the land of Sir John Aytoun. There is recorded at Essex Court-house a deed, dated Rappahannock county November 2, 1686, from Christopher Wormeley, Esq., to Malachy Peale, of Stafford, conveying land which was granted to Thomas Hopkins in 1654, escheated, and afterwards granted to Thomas Hopkins Hone, gent.; by him conveyed to Justinian Aylmer, and by Aylmer to his wife, Frances, now the wife of Christopher Wormeley. In a pedigree of a family of Hone in the Visitation of Essex, 1634 (Hdrl. Soc, page 423), it is stated that Thomas Hone, of Farnham, 1634, married Judith, daughter of Theophilus Aylmer, Archdeacon of London, and had issue: William, Thomas, Theophilus, Edward, and Elizabeth, all alive 1634. It can hardly be doubted that this was the family of the Hones of Virginia. It has been stated that the second wife of Major Robert Beverley, of Middlesex, was Catherine, daughter of Theophilus Hone; but as the parish register states that he and "Madam Katherine Hone were married in Gloster March 28, 1689," it is probable that she was Major Hone's widow, and as Beverley in his will speaks of his "brother-in-law," Colonel John Annistead, of Gloucester, it is probable she was an Armistead. [disproved - she was his daughter]
