About Peter Ellis
Obituary - Jefferson Inquirer, Jefferson City, MO. March 3,1849 "DIED, on the 27th January, 1849, at his residence in this county [Boone], PETER ELLIS, in the 71st year of his age. The subject of this notice was born in Virginia, whence he emigrated in 1801 to the then Spanish Territory of Missouri, and settled in St. Louis
county. Here he married and continued to reside until 1818, when he removed to this then Howard County, where he remained until his death. On the evening of his death, he had retired to rest and was conversing with his aged wife, scarcely an instant before his spirit took its flight. He died without a groan or a struggle. A fitting sequel this to his life, which was calm and peaceful. Mr. Ellis had been for nearly 40 years a professor and a warm and steady friend of Religion: whose beneficient fruits he manifested in visiting the sick, comforting the distressed, doing good, as occasions presented themselves, to all: and fulfilling in every respect the duties of the honest, upright man, and the good citizen. Though living in the quiet retirement of private life, his loss will be deeply felt in the large circle of those, who were accustomed to look up to him for judicious counsel, for friendly advice, to expect his sympathy and ready assistance in times of distress and suffering. As a husband, father, citizen and friend, few have spent a life so exemplary and left a memory so free from reproach, so richly fraught with kindly affection and cherished associations. He leaves a large family, most of whom he had seen grown up to maturity and respectability. Green be his memory!
Pioneer Families of Missouri by Bryan and Rose: p 327-328 ---"Ellis. -- The parents of John, Abraham, Peter and William Ellis were natives of England. The four brothers came to America and settled in Fauquier county, Va. Peter and Abraham came to Missouri in 1808, and settled first in St. Louis county. Abraham was in the War of 1812. He was married first to a Miss Lee, and second to Mary Trussell, of Tennessee. By his two wives he had -- Elizabeth, Jane, Polly, Peter, Ellen, Isabella, Mary, Rosa A., John, James, Cynthia A., Malinda J., Barbara L., William, Amanda R., and one other that died in childhood. Mr. Ellis was a member of the Methodist Church, and the first camp-meetings were held on his land, and for many years afterward camp-meetings were held there regularly. Religious services were also held in private houses, and Mr. Ellis was generally selected to announce the next appointment, which he would do from the top of a stump, in a loud voice, and would then add, "Bring along your guns and dogs, and make as big a show as you can." Peter Ellis settled in Boone county."

Boone Co. Missouri Probate File #845 filed Feb.14, 1849. -ELLIS, PETER - No. 845 - Adm. [date omitted, between 30 January 1849 and 20 February 1849]. John Ellis, Admr. Nancy Smith, John Ellis, Abraham Ellis, William Ellis, Mary Davis, Elizebeth Harris, Elisha Ellis, James Ellis, Peter Ellis, Ann Young
1881 History of Boone County, MO, page 620: "Peter Ellis came in 1818, and brought the second, if not indeed the first, keel-boat that came up the Missouri. After the Ellises, came the Basses, and these in turn were followed by others from the grand old States of Virginia and Kentucky, till soon after Missouri's admission into the Union Cedar township had a population of considerable numbers."
Page 622, History of Boone County, MO. "When Peter Ellis, Sr., lived in Cedar in early times, seven Indians came to his house either on a plundering begging or stealing expedition, one or all being given to whichever of the above weakneses that circumstances most favored. "Boys," said Mr. Ellis to his sons, "go to the smoke-house, corn-crib and tobacco-house, and don't let 'em in." Abe went to the meat-house and posted himself inside. A squaw tried to force her way in, tempted by the thought of the well-cured hams hanging within. Abe tried to "hold her out," but she pushed him in and entered. He pushed her out and she fell backwards over the door-sill, which made all the other Indians laugh. They went off without doing any damage. Peter Ellis was a very determined old man, and had no notion of having his "truck" carried off by loafing Indians. Abe would have been rougher in keeping out the squaw, but was afraid of the Indians, thinking every minute his father might do or say something that would awaken their vengeance."
Page 649, History of Boone County, MO: "PETER ELLIS, Deceased. The subject of this sketch was born in Botetourt county, Virginia, April 1, 1778. He went with his father's family to Greenbrier county, and thence to Hawkins county, Tennessee. In 1800 he went to the Scioto Salt Works, and from there to St. Louis, which was then under Spanish rule. He was married on a sandbar near St. Charles, to Miss Eleanor Patterson, a Catholic priest officiating. Mr. Ellis moved to Boone county in 1818, where he lived until his death, January 27, 1849. They had ten children -- six sons and four daughters -- several of whose biographies appear in this volume."

"Wilfley-Pindall and Related Families" pp 14-17 states :
The parents of Elizabeth Rhodes were Samuel and Sarah Rhodes. Sarah Rhodes was previously married to the father of Peter, Abraham, John and William Ellis, who were born in Botetourt County Virginia, moved with their father's family to Greenbrier County, Virginia and then to Hawkins County, Tennessee where they lived at the time of John and Betty's marriage. Verification of this fact is provided by Barbara Lee Ellis Jamison, daughter of Abraham Ellis, who states, my father's half sister, Betsy Rhodes , married John Wilfley. It will also be noted that Samuel Wilfley , second son of John and Betsy Wilfley, married Nancy Ellis, third daughter of Abraham Ellis and a half sister to Barbara Lee Ellis Jamison. There is no further mention of John and William in this generation.
Biographies of Peter and Abraham Ellis state that Peter was born in Botetourt County, Virginia April 1, 1778 and died in Boone county, Missouri, January 17, 1849. Abraham Alice was born in Botetourt County Virginia in 1785 and died in Callaway county, Missouri in 1848.
The parentage of the Ellis's cannot be further detail except to reiterate a record for 1876 - the pioneer families of Missouri. The brothers migrated from their native Virginia to Hawkins County, Tennessee which places them in the locale with their half sister, Betsy Rhodes, who married John Wilfley. It is difficult to say just when they arrived in Missouri, Peter being at the Scioto salt works at 1800, married in Saint Charles and brought the first, if not this second, keel boat up the Missouri River in 1818 and settled in Boone County and 1817/1818. Abraham was with Peter a part of this time but enlisted in the Canadian war, or war of 1812 under Cathy McAllister and served until it's in. He came to what is now Callaway County Missouri in 1817 and probably arrived with Peter for they were close to one another.

About Benjamin Ellis II
Benjamin Ellis II
birth: about 1715 in Surry County, Virginia
Father: 1688-1759 Benjamin Ellis I 19 Jan 1759
Mother: 1692-1750 Elizabeth Rogers 20 Nov 1750
Spouse: 1715-1787 Mary Underhill
Marriage: 1734 Virginia
Bought 320 acres of land in Pitt County, North Carolina December 15, 1752, later bought an additional 200 acres.
From The Ellis Line From Surry-Sussex, Virginia (1978) by Dixie L.McCrary, page page 133: "His will [Benjamin Ellis I] made 3 Dec. 1758,pr. 19 Jan. 1759 (Sussex Will Bk. A, p. 112), leaves to his "Dear and Loving Wife," (name not given), the plantation for her natural life, and names his sons: William, Jonathan, Jeremiah, Benjamin and Joseph (see Summary on each), and daughters, Mary Proctor, Priscilla Blow, Sarah Andrews, Susanna Andrews and Elizabeth Moreing."
Also from same source, page 137: "He received the 'Great Bible' under his father's will.
Whether he had received other settlement earlier is not known. The 'Great Bible,' in that day of few and costly books may have had a commercial value equal to that of property left other heirs. In any event, this Bible was certainly a family treasure, and the son who received it was especially honored.
It would be interesting to know its history and whether it had come to Benjamin I from his father or an earlier ancestor.
No doubt, Benjamin carried it with him when he left Surry-Sussex, first to live in Isle of Wight (Southampton) Co., and later when he moved to Beaufort ([...]) Co., N.C. Perhaps it was kept by descendants for two or three generation; it seems too much to hope that it has been preserved until today and is now the prized possession of some descendant. It it has been kept, it is hoped it will come to light, with family records to establish a clear and complete record of the branch descended form this Benjamin II."

About Benjamin Ellis
REFN: 4402 From The Ellis Line From Surry-Sussex, Virginia (1978) by Dixie L. McCrar y, page 132: "He was either a son, or grandson, of Jeremaih Ellis I;possibly a grandso n, son of Jeremiah II, if born as late as 1690 (when Jeremiah II would ha ve been c. 19 years of age). His name does not appear on any extant tit he list, the latest available being 1703. He may have reached tithable a ge in 1704, with year of birth, 1688: Court records, Surry Co.(1691-1713 ), p. 362, show his appointment, 18 Apr 1711, with Thos. Bentley and Tho s. Beddingfield, to value and appraise estate of John Lile; for such ares ponsibility he must have reached age of 18 years, possibly 21. Indicatio ns are that his first child was born 1711. "Surry Deeds, Etc., No. 7, pp. 356-7, showdeed of 17 June 1721, of Jeremi ah Ellis (not shown whether Sr. or Jr.), for the nominal sum of 5shilling s, to Benjamin Ellis of 150 acres of land on s. side of Blackwater Swam p, apparently the same tract received by Jeremiah I byVa. Land Gra nt of 16 June 1774. Here again, the title "Sr." or "Jr." was not used;ab sence of the title suggest the elder Jeremiah." Also from source above, page 132-3: "Benjamin Rogers, who d. 28 May 1744 (Albemarle Parish Register), was nam ed as a son in will of William Rogers (b.c. 1657, d. c. 1727) (will ma de 28 Jan. 1725, pr. 17 May 1727, Bk. 7, p. 706); that will named as adau ghter, Elizabeth Ellis b. c. 1687, according to best computation that c an be made from available evidence. The Ellis to who she was married h as not been identified, but evidently was someone closely related to Cal eb and Benjamin Ellis, possible Jeremiah II, whose wife was Elizabet h. If the wife of Jeremiah II, she may have been the mother of Caleb ( if he was b. 1702), but she could not have been the mother of Benjamin.S he may have been Benjamin's wife; no record has been found of the na me of his wife." About Jeremiah Ellis
On May 2, 1682, Jeremiah Ellis was sworn in as a sub-sheriff for Surry County, Virginia, having taken the oath of allegiance. The "Colonial Surry" book compiled by Bodie, includes a list of those reported in 1687 "as qualified in either estate or person to find and maintain a man and horse, or to go when occasion shall require." This list included both Jeremiah Ellis, Sr., and Jeremiah Ellis, Jr. This was a list for service in the Surry County Militia.
On January 5, 1690, Jeremiah, Sr., purchased 455 acres of land on the Johnshakon Swamp in Surry County from John Rawlings, with the original land patent endorsed over to him. Most of this land was later divided between his sons Jeremiah, Jr., and Edward. In 1694, this deed from Jeremiah Ellis to Edward, his son, names Jeremiah, Jr., as a brother to Edward. The land described is on the same county line as the Edward Ellis property of Jeremiah, Sr., and states;
"Surry County Va., Wills-Deeds, 1694-1715, Book 5, pages 33-34, MF 0034101.

Naming Edward as his son and providing him with a gift of 170 acres of land in this deed is another piece of evidence to prove Jeremiah was Edward's father. Jeremiah owned a considerable amount of real estate during his lifetime, and he disposed of most of it by deeds to his sons.
-- from Find a Grave: Jeremiah Ellis
Biography
Surry County deeds establish Jeremiah as a son of Edward. He is the only known son.
Early court record, land records, and tithe lists of Surry County , cited by Dixie McCrary, establish five sons for Jeremiah. Benjamin, b c1688, may have been a son of Jeremiah, b 1671/2.
Jeremiah owned a substantial amount of land in Surry County. He disposed of most of it in his lifetime, mostly to his sons.
He was sworn as sub-sheriff for Surry County on 2 MAy 1682.

Immigration
Came to Virginia by 1636 with Benjamin CARRILL.
Ellis, Edward, 1636 by Nathan Martin, Henrico
Ellis, Edward, 1638 by Benjamin Carrill, James City[1]
Edward Ellis was first transported to the Colony of Virginia by Benjamin Carrill in or before 1636. The first entry in the land records of Virginia, identifying the arrival of Edward Ellis is found in Patent Book No 1 part 1 noted by Neil [sic] Marion Nugent in Cavaliers and Pioneers, p. 41[2], involving the claiming of headrights by one Nathan Martin. It is apparent from the registrations of patents by Martin and Carrill, listing Edward Ellis as one of the headrights, that Carrill had originally transported Ellis to Virginia in or prior to 1636 and had traded or sold the headrights to Nathan Martin in 1636, who, in turn, sold them back to Carrill in 1638.[3]
Property
Edward Ellis owned land in Surry Co., VA by 1655.
His land was decended to Jeremiah Ellis I.
Marriage
He married about 1640 to Elizabeth Stevens.

The settlement of Dedham, Massachusetts
Dedham was settled in the summer of 1636 by "about thirty families excised from the broad ranks of the English middle classes"[4] traveling up the Charles River from Roxbury and Watertown traveling in rough canoes carved from felled trees.[5] These original settlers, including Edward Alleyne, John Everard, John Gay and John Ellis "paddled up the narrow, deeply flowing stream impatiently turning curve after curve around Nonantum until, emerging from the tall forest into the open, they saw in the sunset glow a golden river twisting back and forth through broad, rich meadows."[5] In search of the best land available to them they continued on but
The river took many turns, so that it was a burden the continual turning about.... West, east, and north we turned on that same meadow and progressed none, so that I, rising in the boat, saw the river flowing just across a bit of grass, in a place where I knew we had passed through nigh an hour before. "Moore," said Miles then to me, "the river is like its Master, our good King Charles, of sainted memory, it promises overmuch, but gets you nowhere."[5]
They first landed where the river makes its 'great bend,'[5] on what is today Ames Street, near the Dedham Community House and the Allin Congregational Church in Dedham Square. The Algonquians living in the area called the place Tiot.[2] Tiot, which means "land surrounded by water," was later used to describe the village of South Dedham, today the separate town of Norwood.[6] In "its first years, the town was more than a place to live; it was a spiritual community."[1]
