About Bertram Obert, II

Biography
Bertram OBERT, was an alien to England, so we believe he must have been
French. In several early records when he traveled back and forth from the
Colonies to England, he was referred to as an alien.
Bertram Obert b: Abt 1629 in prob, France d: January 1659/60 in
Lancaster, VA
. m. Anne d: Aft. November 30, 1659 in prob, Lancaster, VA m: Bef. 1652 in
prob, Middlesex, VA
Married Bertram Obert Jr (born c. 1629) in Virginia in 1650. Marriage record shows birth year. Find a grave suggests a death year of 1679.
From Root Web, about the Obert family: "In 1642, Bertram Obert received 650 acres of land on the north side of the Charles River (later known as York River) probably on Poropotank Creek. This was in the general vicinity of what is today Gloucester/Middlesex County, VA. Obert received this land for transporting himself twice, his wife Sarah and several other headrights. This land adjoined that of Mr. Vaus.
Bertram Obert's will, dated 30 Nov 1659, was proved in Lancaster County, VA on 25 Jan 1659/60. It mentioned a wife Anne, sons Bartram and Chichester and two daughters Lettice and Agatha. He also mentioned the child "my wife now goes with," indicating his wife was pregnant when his will was drawn. This child proved to be a daughter named Elizabeth.
Agatha Obert married Christopher Robinson of Middlesex County. Elizabeth married James Curtis of Middlesex. Daughter Lettice married John Vause who was the son of John Vause and Anne last name unknown. On 3 Dec 1662, son Bartram Obert (the eldest son) deeded 200 acres of land to John Vause.
The records indicate Bartram Obert was an "alien" meaning he was not a British subject. It is possible he was of Dutch extraction.
The families with whom Obert associated were very prominent in early Virginia, and came from the ranks of the British landed gentry. There are many records in Middlesex that mention the Obert family."

Colonial Huguenot History
Flag of French Huguenots
Early emigration to colonies
The Huguenots in America. Huguenot settlers immigrated to the American colonies directly from France and indirectly from the Protestant countries of Europe.
In 1700 several hundred French Huguenots migrated from England to the colony of Virginia, where the King William III of England had promised them land grants in Lower Norfolk County. When they arrived, colonial authorities offered them instead land 20 miles above the falls of the James River, at the abandoned Monacan village known as Manakin Town, now in Goochland County. Some settlers landed in present-day Chesterfield County. On 12 May 1705, the Virginia General Assembly passed an act to naturalise the 148 Huguenots still resident at Manakintown. Of the original 390 settlers in the isolated settlement, many had died; others lived outside town on farms in the English style; and others moved to different areas. Gradually they intermarried with their English neighbours. Through the 18th and 19th centuries, descendants of the French migrated west into the Piedmont, and across the Appalachian Mountains into the West of what became Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, and other states. In the Manakintown area, the Huguenot Memorial Bridge across the James River and Huguenot Road were named in their honour, as were many local features, including several schools, including Huguenot High School.

Obert History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms
Obert is a name of Anglo-Saxon origin and came from the baptismal name Hubert. [1] As the naming tradition grew in Europe baptismal names began to be introduced in many countries. Baptismal names were sometimes given in honour of Christian saints and other biblical figures. There are very few Christian countries in Europe that did not adopt surnames from these religious figures.
However, another source claims the name could have been a nickname "from the small Falcon or Hawk so called (Old French hobert, a hobby, hawk)."
The prominent surname Obert originated in France, a country which has been a dominant presence in world affairs for centuries. The earliest forms of hereditary surnames in France were the patronymic surnames, which are derived from the father's given name, and metronymic surnames, which are derived from the mother's given name. The patronyms were derived from a variety of given names that were of many different origins. As well as the names of the saints of the Christian Church, many of the most common French surnames are derived from personal names of Germanic origin. They derive from the language of the Franks, who controlled France between the mid-5th and early 8th centuries. The name Obert is derived from the Old German given name Alberic. Looking back even further, we found the name was originally derived from the Latin word Albericus.
Early Origins of the Obert family
The surname Obert was first found in Burgundy (French: Bourgogne), an administrative and historical region of east-central France in the eastern part of France where one can trace this distinguished name since very early times.
This surname is generally believed to be derived from Albert, an ancient baptismal name. The closest gallo-germanic form of the name was found in the name of Aubertus which according to MM A. Bernard and A. Bruel is recorded in the "Recueil des chartres de l'abbaye de Cluny" some time during the year 922. This same spelling surfaced again around the year 1136 in the cartulary of Saint Cyprien of Poitiers. It is believed that the original name was "Athalbertus," which was first noted during the end of the 6th century.
As it is so frequently found during that period, the name keeps on reappearing under different forms and for this particular name we find many variations such as Adalbertus during the 6th century, Aalbertus and Atalbertus during the 10th century.
From its original settlement the family branched to all the different regions of France, and today the name is encountered, in its several variations, depending on the area, in most parts of France.
The surname Obert was first found in Norfolk as "Hubbard is a characteristic Norfolk name. The early form of the name in this and the neighbouring counties, both in Domesday times and in the centuries immediately following, was Hubert, occasionally written Huberd; and we find that Robert Hubert or Hoberd was rector of Seaming at the close of the 14th century."
Over in Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 listed: Petrus Hubard; Alicia Hubard; Isabella Hoberd; and William Hoberd as all residing there at that time.
"The Visitation of Essex (1541) gives the surname of the family of Huberd indiscriminately as Huberd, Hobert, Hubert, and Hobart. Memorials of a family spelt indifferently Hubbard or Hobart are (or were) to be found in Little Plumstead Church, Norfolk."
Some of the family did migrate to Scotland, but much later on and in small numbers: "Patrick Hobart, was burgess of Dundee in 1649."

Obert Spelling Variations

Early Notables of the Obert family (pre 1700)
Notables of this surname at this time include: Sir James Hobart (d. 1507) of Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, Attorney General during the reign of King Henry VII. , He was the youngest son of Thomas Hobart of Leyham in Norfolk. Sir Henry Hobart, 1st Baronet SL (c. 1560-1625), of Blickling Hall, an English judge and politician. He was Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, from a family long settled in Norfolk and Suffolk, was great-grandson of Sir James Hobart. [q. v.]. He was the son of Thomas Hobart of Plumstead, Norfolk.
