About Gysbert Teunisse Bogaert

The Prince's Flag.

Gysbert Bogaert was a New Netherland settler.

*Humphrey Bogart is Ghysbert Bogaert's 6th great grandson.

Dutch emigrant after 1593. Ancestor of Humphrey Bogart the actor.

"GYSBERT TUNIS BOGAERT, only son of Tunis Gysbert Bogaert and Sarah Rapalje, was born at the Wallabout, and was baptized in New Amsterdam, December 5, 1668. His father's cousin, Jan Laurens Bogaert of Bedford, L.I. was a witness to his baptism. He married April 16, 1689, in the Flatbush Dutch Church, Jannetje Symonson Van Arsdale, a widow. She was born in 1670, and died in Staten Island in 1728.

He went over to Staten Island about 1689, and settled at Fresh Kills where he purchased 250 acres of land, and where his seven children were born. By 1699, the year in which his father died, he acquired either by purchase or deed the greater part of his father's property at the Wallabout, Bushwick and Brooklyn Village. He removed to Flatlands where he served as deacon of the Dutch Church in 1706.

He was quartermaster in the Cavalry Troop of Kings County, a regiment of 250 men under Col. Stephen Van Cortlandt. In 1711 he was a member of the Brooklyn Militia under Col. Henry L. Filkin, and in 1713, a captain of the same regiment under Col. Jacobus Van Cortlandt. He also was a member of the Bushwick Militia. In 1729, he deeded some 76 acres of the Bushwick property to his eldest son Gysbert Jr., the details of which are given in the history of the Bogart property. He died in Bushwick sometime after 1732 when he was named administrator of his son Cornelius' estate." Bogart, John Albert, The Bogart Family, Scranton, PA, printed by the Haddon Craftsmen, 1959 [1]

About Teunis Gysbertsen Bogaert

Teunis Gijsbertszen Bogaert was a New Netherland settler.

The Prince's Flag.

Theunis Gijsbertszn/Gisberszen in den Boogaertman was born in 1562 and resided in the Hoog van Middlecomp, Schoonrewoerd, near Leerdam, Province of South Holland. His first wife was Nelltjien Laurens. He is frequently mentioned in the court records of Schoonrewoerd between 1615 and 1646. It is apparent that he owned considerable property, and like others in the small village was in frequent financial difficulties. When his first wife died, her estate was divided among Theunis and their two surviving children. He was the guardian of his grandchildren, the children of his deceased son Cornelius. On December 26, 1646, he petitioned the court at Leerdam to name another guardian because of his failing eyesight and the fact that he was "an old man, over eighty years of age." Theunis died 1646 or 1647 at Schoonrewoerd, Holland.

Nelltjien Laurens (circa 1556 - circa 1645) was the mother of three children: Louw Theuniszn, Gijbert Theuniszn, and Cornelius Theunis, born circa 1609.

Teunis Gysbertsen Bogaert was born in 1625 in Heykoop, Holland, baptised in nearby Schoonrewoerd, District of Vianen, province of South Holland, and died in 1699, around the age of 74.

He married Sarah Jorise Rapalje in early 1654. She was born Jun 9, 1625 and died in Apr 1685 around the age of 60. She was the daughter of Joris Jansen Rapalje and Catalyntie Jeronimus Trico, and the widow of Hans Hansen Bergen, whom she had married in 1639.

His second wife was Geertje Janse Langendyck, widow of Dirck Jansen Dey, whom he married on Nov 11, 1687.

He was baptised in the old Dutch church in Schoonrewoerd, less than three miles from his birthplace. That church was still standing in 1959.

Theunis Gysbertszen Bogaert migrated to New Amsterdam, New York in 1652 from Heykoop in the Province of South Holland, at the age of 27, as stated by him when he took the oath of allegiance to the King of England, James II, in Brooklyn after the second conquest by the English. He also stated that he had been in this country for 35 years.

As no passenger lists of that period are known to exist, the exact date of his arrival here and the ship in which he sailed is unknown. After arrival, he was a sailor, therefore his absence at sea in the West Indies trade may account for the fact that nothing could be found concerning him in the early records of New Amsterdam until 1654.

In the early part of 1654, he and Sarah Rapalje married in New Amsterdam, and settled at the Wallabout, and later Bushwick, Brooklyn.

On Oct 24, 1654, Governor Pieter Stuyvesant granted to him 100 acres of land at Bedford, Brooklyn, which he shared with Aert T. Middagh. He also owned property in Heykoop, Holland, which he sold to his brother, Abraham, several years after coming to this country.

On Apr 24, 1660, he was appointed by Governor Stuyvesant, a schepen (magistrate) of Amersvoort and Midwout.

In 1661 he was received into the Brooklyn Dutch Reformed Church.

Also in 1661, he sold a part of the original Bergen tract to another prominent Dutch pioneer, Rem Janse Vanderbeek, his neighbor who married Jannetje, sister of Sarah Rapalje.

In 1662, Tunis was a member of the Bushwick Militia, and he served under Captain Ryck Lydecker for a number of years.

On Mar 19, 1663, he was appointed a magistrate in Brooklyn, succeeding his father-in-law Joris Janszn Rapalje, serving in that capacity until 1673. He was on Governor Nicolls' patent of Brooklyn in 1664. He served as a magistrate of Bushwick in 1664 and 1665, and was a representative of Brooklyn in the Hempstead Convention of 1665.

He was one of the signers of a remonstrance to the central authority in New Amsterdam in 1665 when a petition was presented to Governor Stuyvesant regarding the John Scott raids on Long Island.

On Mar 7, 1665, he conveyed to David Joghensz, also of Bushwick, a house and lot adjoining Dirck Volkertson's and Jan Tellier's -- indicating that he had removed to Bushwick.

On Apr 5, 1667, he obtained a confirmatory patent in his own name (instead of the heirs of Hans Hansen, his wife's first husband) of Hans Hansen Bergen's patent of 200 morgen (420 acres) at the Wallabout.

By 1673, Tunis Gysbert Bogaert was one of the most prosperous farmers in Long Island and consequently the largest taxpayer for many years as the early tax rolls show. In addition to his extensive property at the Wallabout, Bedford, Bushwick, and a part of Brooklyn, his material wealth is listed on the tax rolls of 1675 as "five horses, two oxen, and thirty-six head of cattle."

On Mar 26, 1674, he was a member of the convention called by Governor Colve to consult with him in New Amsterdam regarding the best interests of the colony.

In Sep, 1676, he was taxed 331 pounds by Brueckelen (Brooklyn) for 3 poll (3 males), 4 horses, 1 horse of two years, 5 oxen, 5 cows of 3 years, 10 cows of 2 years, 8 cows of 1 year, 9 hogs, 40 morgen of land and valley. (A morgen was equal to 2 and 1/10 acres, a Dutch word for morning, or the area which could be plowed in one morning.)

In 1686, he was on Governor Dongan's confirmatory patent of Brooklyn.

While Tunis transferred the greater part of his property to his son, Gysbert T. Bogaert, there is no record or mention of the Bogaert homestead, or of its disposition, for in 1699, his son was living with his family in Staten Island. If he had left a will, it was not recorded, as none has ever been found in scores of historical archives including the New York State Library at Albany, the Hall of Records in New York and Brooklyn, and other possible repositories.

The several settlements which now comprise the present Borough of Brooklyn had burying grounds adjacent the Dutch churches as was the custom. Tunis, therefore, may have been buried in Bushwick; however, the oldest tombstone in that churchyard which has completely disappeared in the course of time was one dated 1769. If he had been buried in the old Wallabout cemetery, his remains may have been reinterred with a thousand others who were removed to Green Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn in 1840, without a marker.

The name was originally written Bogaert ('in den Boogaertsman) The earliest mention of the name in the province occurs in an assessment roll of Breukelen (Brooklyn), dated 1673, where Theunis Gijsbertse Bogaert is named, having the largest assessment on the roll.

Events

Theunis Gysbertszen Bogaert migrated to New Amsterdam, New York in 1652 from Heykoop in the Province of South Holland, at the age of 27, as stated by him when he took the oath of allegiance to the King of England, James II, in Brooklyn after the second conquest by the English. He also stated that he had been in this country for 35 years. [10]

On Mar 18, 1662 Teunis along with Jan Joris Rapalje and some others petitioned for and were granted a tract of woodland behind the property of Jan Joris.[11]

On the 21st Feb., 1663 , Jan Jorise (Rapalie) having died, at an election for church officers, Willem Bredenbent was continued as Elder for one year, Teunis Jansen Coevers , elected Elder, Willem Gerritsen Van Couwenhoven and Teunis Gysbertse Bogaert , Deacons. On the 27th of Feb., 1664 , Teunis Janssen Coevers and Teunis Gysbertse Bogaert were elected Elders, and Willem Gerritse Van Couwenhoven and Willem Willemsen (Bennet) , Deacons, who were in office when Selyns resigned his charge.

While Tunis transferred the greater part of his property to his son, Gysbert Teunise Bogaert, there is no record or mention of the Bogaert homestead, or of its disposition, for in 1699, his son was living with his family in Staten Island.

Research Notes

Note N34

Land Ownership in NY

In 1715 we find the name of Simon enrolled among the militia of Kings county. Our theory is that this Simon had a brother Tunis, and that they were sons of Gysbert, for, in the assessment mentioned above, he is rated for three polls (himself and two sons); that these sons married:

Simon Bogaert and Margarietje Ten Eyck had the following children:

Elisabet, baptized October 18, 1719;

Margareta, baptized December 3, 1722;

Simon, baptized May 19, 1726; Gysbert, baptized January 19, 1729;

Sarah, baptized February 13, 1732, and perhaps others.

Tunis and Catharine Hageman had the following children:

Isaak, baptized November 21, 1718;

Adrian, baptized December 18, 1720;

Abraham, baptized April 21, 1723;

Maria, baptized March 28, 1725;

Cornelius, baptized March 2, 1729, and perhaps others.

Simon (probably son of Simon) and Martha, his wife, had the following children:

Mary, born December 4, 1746;

Simon, born June 19, 1754;

Richard, born February 22, 1757.

Isaac and Rachel had sons:

John, born October 14, 1770;

Simon, who was the father of Timothy C. Bogart, near the Four Corners.

On Dec 26, 1646, Lambert Jansen, shipper and salver of Dordrecht, petitioned the court at Leerdam, Holland to give power of attorney to Maes Wouters, living in Schoonrewoerd, and Pieter Gysberts, bailiff of Heykoop. Lambert Jensen was the "blood-guardian of the minor children of Aertjien Bastiaens and Gijsbert Theuniszn In den Boogaertman."

The children of Gijsbert Theuniszn In den Boogaertman and Aertjien Bastiaens were:

*i Tunis Gysbert, b. 1625, m. 1st, Sarah Jorise Rapalje in early 1654, 2nd, Geertje Janse Langendyck, d. 1699

ii Aalkien Gijsbertse, m. Cornelius Stevens

iii Neeltjien Gijsbertse, m. Gijsbert Theuniszn Middagh

iv Abraham Gijsbertszn, d. 1701

The Cornelius Bogart Family

The article "Bogart" in Genealogical Notes of New York and New England Families states Cornelius Bogaert the son of Cornelius Teunis Bogaert and Beeltje was born in Schoonderwoerd, and married to Dirckje.

Cornelius Corneliusz De Vos was born about 1626 in Schoonderwoerd, and it is guessed by some that Cornelius De Vos was the same person as Cornelius Corneliusz Bogart.

The name Bogart was an occupational name that meant “orchard man” while de Vos may be an estate or honorary title.

Cornelius Corneliusz De Vos and Dirckje Pieterse Coeymans reportedly had the following children:

1. Jacob Corneliusz [De Vos] Bogaert was born in 1654 in Albany, New York, and died April 3, 1725, in Albany, NY.

2. Jan Corneliusz Bogaert was born in 1655 in Albany, NY and died in 1740 Poss. Kinderhook, NY.

3. Hendrick Corneliusz Bogaert was born in 1656 in Albany, NY, and died May 9, 1716, Marbletown, Ulster, NY.

4. Jannetje Corneliusz Bogaert was born in 1660 in Beverwyck, Albany, NY and died June 20, 1703, in Albany, NY.

5. Cornelius Corneliusz Bogaert was born in 1664 in Albany, NY and died in 1751 in Coxsackie, NY.

Cornelius Corneliusz Bogart was born about 1626 in Beicop next to Schoonderwoerd the first born son of Beeltje De Vos and Cornelius Theunisz Bogart.

Cornelius Theunisz Bogart married Beeltje Corneliusz de Vos in 1610 in Beicop, which adjoins Heicop, near Schoonderwoerd. Beeltje was the daughter of Cornelius De Vos and an unknown mother, was born in 1592, and died December 10, 1661 in Schoonderwoerd.

Cornelius Theunisz Bogart married second Dirckje Bogart.

The Children of Cornelius Theunisz Bogaert and Belitgen or Beeltje Corneliusz de Vos were the following:

1. Geertje Corneliusz [De Vos?] Bogaert born in 1628 in Schoonderwoerd and died January 23, 1657.

2. Gijsbert Corneliusz Bogaert born in 1628 in Schoonderwoerd and died in 1684 in New Amsterdam, the New World

3. Cornelius Corneliusz [De Vos] Bogaert born in 1630 in Schoonderwoerd.

4. Jannetje Corneliusz Bogaert born in 1634 in Schoonderwoerd and died May 1, 1657 in Schoonderwoerd.

Cornelius Theunisz Bogart had a brother Gijsbert Theunisz Bogaert who was born in 1595 in Heicop and died December 10, 1684 in Heicop. He married first Aertje Kirkse (Coeymans) Bastions January 1, 1624 in Hei en Beicop, Schoonderwoerd. Aertje Kirkse (Coeymans) was born January 1, 1597 in Heicop and died December 1, 1646 in Heicop. Gijsbert Bogart married second an unknown.

Louw Theunisz Bogaert another brother of Cornelius Theunisz Bogaert was born in 1598 in Schoonderwoerd and died in 1677 in Vianen. He married Neeltje Lowendr Boogaertman in 1624. Neeltje Lowendr was born in Schoonderwoerd.

Cornelius Corneliusz Bogart Van Der Schoonderwoerd came to Renselaerswyk before 1640. His brother Gijsbert was in New Amsterdam in 1640 and in the Catskill, NY, before 1661 with four sons.

Whether Cornelius De Vos and Cornelius Bogart are the same person is really undetermined.
