William enlisted on 23 August 1915; attested at Trentham on the 24th. He was aged 29 years and 1 month and was described as being 5', 8" tall with dark brown hair, blue eyes and a dark complexion. He had a scar below his left ear and another on the left side of the back of his head. Church of England.

He served a total of 3 years 233 days, of which 3 years 157 days were spent overseas. He was discharged on 12 April 1919.
