James enlisted on 8 March 1916 at Trentham, Upper Hutt, Wellington, aged 20 years. He was recorded as being 5', 4" tall with a fair complexion, light brown hair and blue eyes. He had tattoos on both forearms and both thighs. He had previous service with the 14th Reinforcement. His last address was Church Street in Onehunga. His next of kin was his father James William McPike, Church Street, Onehunga. Medical examination showed he had hysteria and was subject to fainting fits (had signs of an old injury to his head).
He was discharged as being medically unfit for service.
