Charles enlisted on 13 June 1917 (attested at Woodville), aged 36 years. He was recorded as being 5', 4½" tall with a tanned complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. Medical notes state Charles had a head injury four years previously and was unconscious for three days. His next of kin was Mr J Wyeth (father), Ebden Down, Upper Hutt, Wellington.

His total service was 1 year 336 days, of which 1 year 228 days was spent overseas. He was discharged on 25 June 1919.
