Darcy enlisted on 8 January 1917 at Palmerston North. He was aged 21 years, 11 months and was single. He was recorded as being 5', 8" tall with a dark complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair. His last residence was 61 Broad Street, Palmerston North. His next of kin was Mrs S. Greer (mother), 61 Broad Street, Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Darcy sailed on 26 April 1917 aboard the 'Turakina', disembarking at Plymouth, Devon, England on 20 July 1917.

He was discharged on 21 July 1919, no longer being considered physically fit for war service. He served a total of 2 years and 59 days overseas.
