Harold enlisted on 25 June 1916 at Featherston, Wairarapa. He was aged 23 years, 3 months and single. He was recorded as being 5', 9½" tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and light/fair hair. His last address was 61 Broad Street, Palmerston North. His next of kin was Mrs S. Greer (mother), 61 Broad Street, Palmerston North, New Zealand.

He sailed on 2 January 1917 aboard the 'Opawa'. disembarking in London, England on 27 March 1917.
