Frank enlisted on 19 October 1915 at Trentham (Wellington), aged 25 years. He was recorded as being 5' 6½" tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair. He'd a scar on the right side of his nose and wore "artificial" (false) teeth (upper plate required mending). His next of kin was Mr John Sunnex (father), Masterton. This was later crossed out and inserted was "Mrs Wadsworth, Martinborough".

On 20 April 1918 he was wounded in action and admitted to hospital. He recovered to march into Etaples on 17 June.

He served a total of 3 years, 90 days of which 2 years, 346 days were served overseas. He was discharged on 16 January 1919 as being no longer physically fit for war service on account of illness contracted on active service.
