Charles enlisted on 26 May 1916 at Levin (Horowhenua), aged 24 years. He was recorded as being 5', 3½" tall with a fair complexion, fair hair and blue eyes. He had a tattoo of a lady in tights on his left forearm, hands clasped across rising sun on right forearm, MOTHER above and MIZPAH on scroll below, dagger through scroll with KIA ORA inscribed. He also had a brown pigmented patch on his left buttock. He had previously served with the territorials. He was admitted to the cottage hospital at the Trentham camp (Upper Hutt, Wellington) on 3 July 1916 with an abscess on his back. His next of kin was Mrs M Mudgway (mother), Cambridge Street, Levin.

His total length of service was 2 years 228 days, of which 2 years 88 days were served overseas. He was discharged on 8 February 1919.
