Sydney enlisted on 30 May 1916 at Trentham, Upper Hutt (Wellington), aged 26 years. He was recorded as being 5', 8" tall with a fair complexion, light hair and blue eyes. On his abdomen was a surgical scar. He had previously been rejected for military service because of his heart. His last address was 417 Queen Street, Hastings. His next of kin was John Wilmshurst (father), 68 Richmond Street, Petone, Wellington.

On 28 March 1919 he was discharged on medical grounds due to "disordered action of heart".
