Charles enlisted on 14 June 1917, aged 23 years; attested at Woodville. He was recorded as being 5', 8½" tall with light brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion. Anglican.

He embarked for New Zealand aboard the 'Waimana' on 10 May 1919. He served a total of 2 years 38 days, of which 1 year 254 days were spent overseas. He was discharged on 21 July 1919.
