William enlisted in March 1917 at Waihi, aged 25 years. He was reported as being 5', 6" tall, with a medium complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. He was currently serving with the territorials. His next of kin was Mrs Mudgway (mother), Robin Street, Waihi.

He was wounded at Ploegsteert, France on 16 October 1918 and had surgery on his sciatic nerve.

His total service was 2 years 54 days, of which 1 year 40 days was served overseas. He was discharged on 25 February 1919, no longer being fit for war service on account of wounds received in action.
