Rito enlisted for the first time on 17 November 1916 at Wellington, aged 19 years. He was recorded as being 5', 7" tall with a fair-dark complexion, dark brown hair and light blue eyes. A remark notes he was "alert, prompt intelligent". His next of kin was Mrs E Moore (mother), 121 London Street, Wanganui (also recorded as being 15 Portland Crescent, Wellington).
His total service was 2 years 146 days, of which 2 years 60 days was served overseas. He was discharged on 3 June 1919. His address on discharge was 35 Ratanga Crescent, Wellington.

Rito enlisted for the second time on 15 May 1940, aged 39 years. His last address was 365 Happy Valley Road, Brooklyn, Wellington. He was recorded as being 5', 6½" tall, with a fresh complexion, brown hair and grey eyes. He had previous military service with the (British) North Russian Relief Force (latter part of 1919); also navy (in total 7 years). His next of kin was Lily Morton (wife), 27 Matai Street, Castlecliff, Wanganui; this was crossed out and 62 Hovell Street, Echuca, Victoria, Australia inserted.
He was reported missing on 18 May 1841 after getting isolated from his regiment. On 22 April 1943 he was a prisoner of war at German stalag 383 in Greece, POW # 0784. He was also in German POW camps in Austria and Germany. By 29 April 1945 he was safe in the United Kingdom.
His total service was 5 years 145 days. He was discharged on 6 November 1945.
