Samuel enlisted on 19 April 1917 at Wellington; he was aged 38 years & 7 months. He was recorded as being single, 5', 8½" tall with a ruddy complexion, fair hair and blue eyes. His next of kin was Mrs E Greer (mother), Tawa Flat, Wellington.
He left New Zealand on 26 July 1917 aboard the 'Ulimaroa', arriving in Plymouth, Devon, England on 24 September 1917.
He served a total of 1 year, 307 days overseas and was discharged on 25 June 1919.
