Alma enlisted on 19 October 1915 aged 33 years (attested at Trentham, Upper Hutt, Wellington). She was recorded as being 6' tall with a fresh complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes. Her last address was Kauwhenua, Otorohanga. Her next of kin was Mrs Sarah Jane Mexted (mother), Kio Kio, King Country, Auckland.

In France in May 1916 she was admitted to hospital with two bones fractured in her right forearm.

Her total service was 1 year 105 days, of which 341 days were spent serving overseas. She was discharged on 1 February 1917, no longer being physically fit for war service.
