Alec enlisted on 25 August 1915 at Trentham, Upper Hutt, Wellington, aged 20 years. He was recorded as between 5', 8½" - 5', 10" tall with a fair complexion, brown/auburn hair and blue-grey eyes. He had a small scar on the left side of his neck (result of old glandular abscess). His last residence was Thames. He had previous military service in the NZEF, 8th Reinforcements (medically unfit). He had had concussion. On enlistment his next of kin was Mary Mudgway (mother), Te Aroha West. After marriage his next of kin was Mrs E Mudgway (wife), Upper Hutt (Wellington). On one document he was classified as fit for home service; on another fit for foreign service.

He served a total of 1 year 222 days, of which 1 year 114 was served overseas. He was discharged on 3 April 1917 on account of illness contracted on active service (was in the trenches when a shell exploded by him).
