Edwin enlisted on 21 August 1916 at Featherston (Wairarapa), aged 46 years. He was recorded as being 5', ¾" tall with a fair complexion, dark hair and hazel eyes. His last address was 140 Tasman Street, Wellington. His next of kin was Mrs Elizabeth M Jones (wife), 140 Tasman Street, Wellington. On 4 October 1916 he was hospitalised at Featherston camp with influenza. He was discharged from hospital on the 9th. He served a total of 1 year 163 days, of which 1 year 28 days were served overseas. He was discharged on 31 January 1918, on account of being over-age and because he'd had cirrhosis of the liver for some years.
