Herbert enlisted at Trentham (Wellington) on 23 August 1915. He was a self-employed farmer and had previous training with the Territorials. Aged 21 years, he was 6' tall with brown hair, blue eyes and a clear compexion. A comment stated: "Has never had a serious illness. Has never had a fit.
