Sydney enlisted on 15 November 1915 at Taihape, aged 32 years. He was recorded as being 5', 11" tall with a fair complexion, light brown hair and grey eyes. His last address was Taihape. His next of kin was Mrs N Mexted (mother), Coal Street, Dannevirke.
On 25 October 1916 he was reported as missing, believed wounded 28 September. On 27 November he was sentenced in a military court to one year's imprisonment on account of being absent without leave. The sentence was suspended on 7 December. He was evacuated to hospital in England on 13 May 1917.
He served a total of 1 year 363 days, of which 1 year 201 days was served overseas. He was discharged on 13 November 1917, no longer being physically fit for active service on account of shrapnel wounds received on field service.
