William enlisted on 21 May 1917 at Wellington, aged 20 years. He was recorded as being 5', 3" tall with a dark complexion, black hair and hazel eyes. He had previous military service with the Lower Hutt Senior Cadets (38 Coy). His last address was Heke Street, Lower Hutt (Wellington).

In January 1918 whilst serving in France he was found to have tuberculosis and was considered permanently unfit for military service. The disability was considered clearly attributable (by explosure and infection) to service during the war.
