Roland enlisted under the name of Ronald BELK on 12 October 1917 at Palmerston North, aged 25 years. He was recorded as being 5', 10¼" tall with a dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes. His religion was recorded as "free thinker".

On 4 July 1918 he signed up again at Featherston (Wairarapa), and signed a declaration stating the name of Ronald BELK to be incorrect and his true name to be Rolland Aberagatha Noah MUDGWAY. His last address was 'Arawa', College Terrace, Palmerston North (Manawatu). He had previous military service with J Battery, NZFA. At the time of his first attestation he was unmarried. On his second attestation, his next of kin was Mrs Ruth Holdsworth Mudgway (wife), 56 North Street, Palmerston North.

In July and October 1918 he was hospitalised at Trentham (Upper Hutt) with influenza. In August 1918 he was fined 28 days pay for being absent without leave.
