Site set-up

No living people are included in these pages except in cases where the person listed has given me permission. There's not much information as yet about our collateral ancestors (e.g. cousins or parents and siblings of our ancestors' spouses etc.). However this data is often stored in my private database, so don't be afraid to ask. I'll be including this information as time permits.

Please note: I am not a professional historian or genealogist. As a rule I don't do research for others but if I should have information relevant to you, I will happily share.

THE BRANCHES -- You will notice there are nine "branches". Many of the kinsfolk are blood-related but some are related only by marriage. As this site is primarily about the ancestors of my descendants, what I've done is look at it from our perspective and created a branch for each of my grandparents, one for each of my children's paternal grandparents, and one for my grandchildren's maternal ancestors.

This means an ancestor needn't necessarily show in a branch with their surname. As an example, our ancestor Charles Moore, Royal New Zealand Fencible, is to be found in the GEAR & MOORE branch, not the MOORE & ASTON branch.

NAMES

  • Women are listed under their maiden names.

  • Where a person went by a nickname, that nickname is in "inverted commas".

  • Where a person was known by a middle name, that name is in (brackets) with no inverted commas.

  • Surnames are as they appear on records. Under each surname title are other spellings seen of the name (the surname explanations usually relate to the title name).

  • Mc/Mac surnames are all listed as "Mac" in branch indexes and pages titles, purely to keep them in alphabetical order.

SOURCES -- Data and information was initially obtained from family sources. I've endeavoured to double-check and verify the initial research myself and in most cases have built on it by obtaining information from birth, marriage or death certificates; birth, baptism, marriage or death registers; BMD indexes; census records; emigration & immigration records; shipping passenger lists; wills; probates; military records; newspapers; printed publications & transcriptions of extracted parish registers. [E&OE]

The names of the initial source(s) and/or researcher(s) are shown at the bottom of each family page. Pages with no named source(s) are attributed to myself.

The persons mentioned in these pages are not just my people; many cousins can lay claim to the same ancestors. I believe in sharing family data and am so thankful to those people that have helped me by generously sharing photos and information. Acknowledgements

Branch indexes -

  • Surnames on their own - e.g. WILMSHURST - are our direct lines.

  • Surnames including another surname in brackets - e.g. MEXTED (Wilmshurst) - are our kinsfolk. The surname in brackets is the family they're related to.

UNPROVED & UNVERIFIED CONTENT -- Unproved and unverified data is followed by ?

This is the result of my Internet sleuthing and not to be taken as fact. If you should copy any of my draft research, please ensure people know it is unproved. I ask also that should you copy anything from this site to your own webpages, you please include a link to this site so viewers can see any updates. THANK YOU
