Alexander enlisted on 18 September 1916 at Trentham, Upper Hutt (Wellington), aged 26 years. He was recorded as being 5', 8" tall with a fair complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. He was noted as being overweight. He had previous military service with the 21st Reinforcements. His last address was Hopelands, Pahiatua (Tararua). His next of kin was Mrs Emma Mexted (mother), Pahiatua.

His total service was 16 days. He was discharged on 5 October 1916 as being physically unfit for active service due to having loose cartilage of the right knee as the result of an old fibula fracture.

It appears he enlisted again on 17 December 1916 at Masterton (Wairarapa) and was discharged again on 2 February 1917.
