Edgar enlisted on 2 April 1917. On 1 June 1917 he was medically examined at Featherston military camp, Featherston, Wairarapa, aged 24 years 7 months. He was recorded as being 5', 4½" tall with dark brown hair, blue eyes and dark complexion. Church of England. Born in England he had been resident in New Zealand for three years. His last address was 282 Cuba Street, Wellington and he was married with one child. His trade/calling was horse driver and his last employer Munro of Wellington. His will dated 29 May 1917 made wife Rose Amelia Phelps, c/- Hickson, Rua Roa, Dannevirke, sole executor & trustee.
He was killed in action in the field (Somme) on 18 April 1918.
