ROBERT EDWARD GILOY
Robert Edward Giloy, son of the late Louise Zimmerman and Philip Giloy, was born in the town of Garden Valley October 11th 1911, and passed away at the Middle River Sanitarium near Superior April 12th, 1949, reaching the age of 37 years, 6 months and 1 day.
He was baptized and confirmed in St. John’s Evangelical Reformed church in Humbird. He was married July 17, 1946 to Grace Flood Duchow of Humbird and they have since lived in Marshfield. They have one baby daughter, Gail Diane, 15 months old, besides his two step-daughters, Connie Jo and Judy Kay. He leaves his aged father, Philip Giloy, five brothers , William, Clarence, Herbert, Vernon and Gerald all of Humbird Vicinity, three sisters, Amanda, Mrs. Martin Fisher; Ella, Mrs. John Mueller, both of Spencer and Rosetta at home.
He was preceded in death by his mother and one sister. He was a World War II veteran, entering the army April 14, 1942 at Eau Claire and was discharged December 6th 1945, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Total service 3 years, 7 months, was honorably discharged. Went overseas April 10, 1944, returned December 1st, 1945. He served in the 182nd Field Artillery Battalion.
Was in Normandy campaign, northern France, Rhineland, central Europe. Decorations and citations received were the Victory medal, American Theatre ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 4 bronze battle stars, 3 overseas and service bars, 1 service stripe and good conduct medal.
He was taken serious ill March 19th when he entered the Marshfield hospital where it was found he was suffering from an advance and quick form of tuberculosis. He was taken at once to Middle River Sanitorium accompanied by his wife, where everything possible was done for him. His wife remained at his bedside constantly. His brothers and sisters were in attendance also. He failed rapidly and passed away at 2:55 a.m. April 12th, 1949. The body was brought to the Cole Funeral Parlors in Neillsville and the funeral was held at the St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed church in Humbird, Friday, April 15, 1949. Rev Arthur Gausman conducted a prayer at the Clarence Olson home and gave the sermon assisted by Rev. G. Hohman of St. Johns Church. Harold Lasey sang “I need thee every hour”, “Some day He’ll make it plain to me” and “God Understands”. Accompanied by Mrs. Will Therber on the organ. The pall bearers were the 5 brothers already mentioned and one brother-in-law, Martin Fisher. The flower girls were Betty Fisher, Jean Ann Flood, nieces and Pauline Zimmerman and Marie Bemis, cousins. He was laid to rest in East Lawn cemetery, Alma Center and was buried with full military honors under the auspices of the Humbird American Legion.
Those from away who were in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. John Mueller and son Donald, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Fisher, Betty and John of Spencer. Mr. and Mrs. Rhinehart Zimmerman, Mrs. Harry Schoolcraft, Mrs. Joe Widmar of Black River Falls. Mr. and Mrs Ernest Rush, Mrs. Clyde Reichembach of Wrightsville, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Flood, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Teeples, Mrs. Leroy Bunce, Mrs. Bessie Brandeau and Roy Flood of Hatfield, Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Sanders and Mr. and Mrs. Steve Zeman of Melrose, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thompson of Irving. Many friends and relatives from Alma Center and Neillsville.
