Before coming at this school I knew that it is a Green school and its students concern a lot about the environment. I saw on school’s website many photos of activities, events and projects that pupils have organized about this subject. But I didn’t realize how well-informed and sensitive are about many environmental issues, such as climate change, consumption of energy, water significance, biodiversity and recycling. Today, it was a good chance for me to realize that and to have a really interesting conversation with them in the framework of a two hours project with many activities. This project in which participated in students from various classes and ages, included: - PowerPoint presentation about climate change entitled “Climate changes… I do care!” (What’s the weather like today?, Is it normal for the climate to change?, What is the impact of climate change?, This sounds serious! What are we going to do about it?). For designing this presentation, I used material from the EUBookshop’s publication “You control climate change! – Make a pledge” and from the NGO WWF – my part ;) - Videos of the European Union about energy and energy saving lightbulbs (Energy, let’s save it!, Better light with less energy) - Interactive games from various websites about saving energy at home (Energy Home, Spot the danger, No energy, Save energy, Environment challenge) – my mentor’s part :D - PowerPoint presentation of the EUBookshop’s fairy-tail entitled “Together”. I enjoyed so much reading this story to the pupils and discussing about it with them!
Another important point concerning this project was local media coverage. I strongly believe that all good practices and innovative activities with and/or for the children should spread by the media. On the attachments of this post, you could find the short text that I shared with the reporters about this project. It was so hard for me but I managed to tell it in Slovak!
Before this project, at the first hour, I assisted my mentor on the vocabulary about basic characteristics for describing someone. We taught this vocabulary by playing with the pupils and using a few photos showing me with my friends. I find that this is a very attractive method for children.
And as you have already understood, it was one more day full of energy and creativity in classroom!
