After volunteer activity at the city’s animal shelter, pupils organized another volunteer "mission" focused on mentally disabled people. They planned a visit in Domena, a nonprofit organization which hosts and takes care about these people, who spend there more than six hours every day. Pupils tried to combine their visit with the European Year of Volunteering 2011 and the European Union. For this reason, pupils prepared a special book with their drawings about EU Member-States using mostly images and not so much text. Aim of this publication was to sensitize mentally disabled people about cultural diversity and cooperation in Europe. At the end of this book pupils attached some activities with big letters and colorful pictures. Also, they offered cotton bags with the flag of the European Union in which they put pencil kits, rulers, card postals and a mini book only with pictures entitled “Democratic change in Europe”. In this action took part 22 pupils from Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 and they were all very happy about their visit to Domena! Their next mission concerning Domena will be to create a collection of puzzles. One emloyee of this organization told to pupils that mentally disabled people enjoy to make puzzles because they improve their coordination of fingers and they calm down. Also, on next week pupils will prepare some posters which they will hang on School’s corridors and main entrance in order to inform their classmates, parents, teachers and visitors about their volunteer actions and their willingness to share smiles.
