Learning Greek – Body parts and Countries
Post date: May 23, 2011 5:27:50 PM
After a long time, today we had another Greek lesson! Today’s lesson was about body parts and countries. Pupils tried to pronounce the Greek words and they played in pairs a game about body parts. As concern the Countries, they noticed that most of the Countries have got the ending - ία (–ia) (e.g. France-Γαλλία-Galia, Slovakia-Σλοβακία-Slovakia, Sweden-Σουηδία-Suidia). During this lesson, I tried something new: a game with a video clip! First, I wrote to the board some words of the video clip “O Papagalos” (“The parrot”, it’s a song from a well-known music group for kids in Greece). After, pupils saw this video clip and they tried to find how many times did they hear three specific words (papagalos, sxolio, echo). At the end we had a short discussion about what they understood, combining the lyrics (sound of the words) and the video-shots. At the last minutes of this lesson, I asked for pupils’ feedback about our next Greek lessons. I believe that this is a very important part of the teaching process because it’s a direct way to learn about pupils’ needs, thoughts, ideas and teacher can adjust the lessons to pupils’ interests and their way/ rhythm of learning. Of course this process is a two-way process. This means that feedback comes from both sides (teacher-pupils). It’s like a discussion with no limits. So, here are the results of this feedback: - more games with video clips - less new vocabulary - more activities/ games - to send the vocabulary with the pronunciation and the Slovak word to pupils’ e-mails - practice phrases/ dialogue in pairs - outdoor lessons
