Cap, water, gloves, plastic bags, camera, willingness to make a change and let’s go to clean! All started 14 days ago when my mentor contacted the Slovak Ministry of Environment and asked to join in the campaign “Earth Day”. The aim of the campaign was to clean some area in our city. 12 days ago: we had a parents meeting in which we explained how important this action is and how many benefits would be for pupils, especially as concern volunteering and active participation. 8 days ago: we and one small group of pupils took our cameras and visited some areas near our city in order to have a first hand view of the quantity of the rubbish and in order to organize better and effectively our action. 4 days ago: pupils contacted “Green line” of the Town council to inform them about the action and ask for a truck to pick up all the plastic bags with rubbish after the implementation of the action. Today: it was time for action! At 14:45, 20 pupils from Grades 5A and 5C came to the meeting point –our School-, made small teams for each rubbish material, wore gloves and shared big plastic bags. At 15:00, our mission has been launched! The hill near the old part of the city, Sibenicny vrch, was full of all kind of rubbish. It took one and a half hour to clean the area from most of the rubbish.
At 16:30, the truck from technicke sluzby came and picked up 8 big plastic bags.
Next mission: to organize a big similar action with all pupils (573) of our School!
