Abstract:

In 2018, after three years of research, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a special report for Policymakers on the impact of global warming. The report challenged the original perception that keeping global warming below two degrees this century, would enable humankind to manage the related changes. This study concluded that going past 1.5C is compromising the planet's liveability and that this temperature "guard rail" could be exceeded in just 10 years, in 2030. The consequences of failing to keep temperature rises below 1.5C include dangerous changes like a global sea-level rise about 10cm (4in) exposing 10 million more people to the risks of flooding, extinction of coral reefs, significant impacts on ocean temperatures and acidity, and the ability to grow staple crops such as rice, maize and wheat.

Researchers essentially describe the world “with a dangerous fever, caused by humans”, but it is possible to manage the fever by limiting warming to 1.5C and staying below it. This requires urgent, large-scale changes from governments and individuals and significant investments for two decades in four big global systems: energy • land use • cities • industry

The good news is that there is a growing, global ecosystem of progressive organizations and dedicated individuals working to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change, sustainable development, and efforts to eradicate poverty with innovative programs, technologies and engineered solutions. This session will introduce attendees to organizations from industry, multilaterals and the startup community driving cleantech solutions, adapting manufacturing practices and keeping food on the table in a changing climate.
