Exploring Fractal Space with Biomimicry and Origami

Abstract: Architecture is the art of designing space. Specifically fractal space -- space is all around us and as architects it is a privilege to design the space that is already there into something that betters the lives of people. Fractal space meaning that outside space folds to become buildings or structures (it gives a sense of scale) and then space continues to fold in on itself to become details (this adds the human senses to the sense of scale). I work on architecture through the lens of biomimicry and the technique of origami

Bio: I am a graduate student at the University of South Florida, currently in my final semester, pursuing a Master’s in Architecture. In my final/thesis year I have chosen to Explore Biomimicry through Origami. Biomimicry being learning from Nature to inspire Design and Origami being the art of folding, seemingly do not have any correlation. In origami there are only two types of folds, Mountain or Valley fold; in order to expand my material selection I focused on looking at the different folds as simply a joint or detail.
