Singing has been part of Cherokee life since pre contact times.
Traditionally, ONLY men may sing.
Some community groups did allow elderly women of a certain status to sing sometimes.
Women may accompany male singers using percussion instruments such as terrapin shell rattles and tune-able water drums.
