The 1829 Hymnal in the Cherokee language was the work of Elias Boudinat and S. A. Worcester.
It was printed for the American Board of Commissioners for foreign missions.
We have had it online for over a decade and you can see it at the Daily Bible Reading Site.
The first edition, printed in 1829, was reprinted many times: 1834, 1835, 1866, and many more.
You can view an ONLINE VERSION of a PDF of it HERE. (be aware: this will take you out of our website)
It contained about 88 pages of songs without any musical notation or English translations (except for some titles).
The tunes were listed by name and had little to nothing to do with the actual meanings of the songs themselves.
Original editions of the first year are extremely rare and expensive as they are coveted by book collectors.
We do not currently own a copy of this original first edition, but we do have a copy of one of its many reprints that are now in the public domain themselves.
Should we ever get a donation of an earlier one, we hope to publish it online freely as well for more to get access to it.
Therefore, we plan to simply list the actual original tune titles for the songs as they would have been sung in 1829. (in later editions, several of these were switched out because the popular tunes of the time period of the reprint were incorporated).

* Although these are often derided as "wheelbarrow tunes" we feel that they are an important step in the development of singing and intend to preserve this information for those who care to study it.
