Only women may use the terrapin shell rattles. Additionally, per United States of America law, severe fines may be imposed on anyone who possesses a natural eastern box terrapin shell without federal permits, forcing many to use substitutes. (See the site page on acceptable substitutes)
Men and women may use the hand rattles.
