Arbitration a success for Aeroplan members
On Thursday, January 23, 2014, an Aeroplan arbitration hearing was held in Montreal in front of Arbitrator Michel Picher.
The 17 grievances brought forward by the union were divided into five categories:
1. Scope work violation
2. Relief agent language
3. Union time off
4. Members’ meeting with union representative
5. Union representation in non-disciplinary meetings
Arbitrator Picher dismissed the grievance on union representation in non-disciplinary meetings and also one of the grievances on union time off.
However Picher allowed our grievances and supported our interpretation of the collective agreement on scope work in regards to RT (request tracker), the language on relief agents, members meeting union reps on company time and two grievances on union time off.
While your bargaining committee is disappointed that the arbitrator did not rule in our favour for two of the grievances, we can be very proud of the work that has been accomplished. The favourable rulings (particularly in regards to scope work violations) will help to secure our work and improve working conditions now and in the future.
We hope that this will mark a new path for a more co-operative and respectful work environment at Aeroplan call centres. Details of the ruling will be available in the union office as soon as they are received from the arbitrator.
In solidarity,
Your Aeroplan Bargaining Committee:
Vince De Sua
Stephen Lussier
Ross McConkey
Jane Winfield
Jamie Ross, Local 2002 President
Marcel Rondeau, Local 2002 Executive Assistant
Leslie Dias, Unifor National Representative

Hello Everyone, Jan 09 2014.
A very busy month lies ahead, on the floor and with in the union. We have our quaterly UMHQ next week on the 14th of January. We have a number of issues to raise with the Company I will post the minutes after the meeting. The following week is a crucial week for us. We have our first Arbitration on January 23 in Montreal, I will be attending and will report back as soon as I can with the decisions that the Arbitrator renders. We have waited 12-13 months for this day on some of our grievances. The constant lack of commitment from the Company to resolve issues locally has caused a lot of stress and distrust for you toward the employer. Unfortunate , but our reality. We will present our best case and the judge will decide. With a little luck I can bring some positive news to you. The week after that I will be in YYZ for GIDIP Trustee meetings, the office will be manned in my absence. If you have any concerns regarding Sun Life please bring them forward to the Union. The service should be identical to Claim Secure so if you come across any discrepancies we will investigate. Being a new provider we anticipate a few snags.
Happy New Year,
Ross.
