National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada
For 45 minutes on December 6, 1989 an enraged gunman roamed the halls of Montreal's École Polytechnique (the School of Engineering at the University of Montreal), systematically killing 14 women and wounding 13 more. Marc Lepine, 25, separated the men from the women and before opening fire on the classroom of female engineering students he screamed, "I hate feminists." These women died as martyrs solely because they were women. Almost immediately, the Montreal Massacre of 1989 (21 years ago) became a provoking moment in which mourning turned into outrage about all violence against women.
The CAW established an eternal flame at the CAW Family Eductation Centre in memory of those who were violently murdered and pledged "To our Daughters":
"We pledge we will work to transform our world so that neither your dreams, nor your lives are cut short by violence. On behalf of all CAW members, we dedicate this Eternal Flame in the spirit of our daughters in the belief that we can create a more just and humane world".
Sadly, violence toward women still continues today in our society, and in the world. We are taking steps to educate the population and to heal the victims affected by acts of violence and aggression.
Please join in the evening of Remembrance, Memorial, and Celebration in a ceremony dedicated to ending violence against women and girls.
We will show a Documentary on the Montreal Massacre, Hold a Candlelight Vigil and end with an evening to celebrate women. Those here, those who have past, and our Future.
All women are welcome; please feel free to bring your Daughters, Sisters, Mothers, Friends.
