Students in my drawing and illustration class working on their final exam. They have to do a theme collection drawing where they do a massive amount of research on their chosen theme to make this massive 2 x 4 ft. drawing. This drawing is usually very successful, the whole room is silent, everyone scribbling away. I think it has to do with the fact that they have so much autonomy, and just like last year, I didn't give them enough time, everyone underestimated how much two weeks of time is worth and barely rendered things. Only a few of the drawings got anywhere near halfway finished. I think the problem with these long drawings is how inflexible I have to be with everything, I don't want to only give them two weeks. I had to give them two weeks. It's actually a much longer story that I won't get into, but it bears mentioning in a kind of concealed passing that I did not plan my year very well or anticipate what could have happened at any time but actually did happen this year. My only regret is that I didn't think it through ahead of time. An eternal lament in this profession.
