Syllabus
This has been moved to allow for easy access, the other sections of the syllabus are listed below.
Here's a comprehensive linked list of the videos for comp. arts/photo. Please make sure you consult the Criteria and Objectives posted in class and the assignment in Edmodo before proceeding to the next assignment. Talk with Mr. Turek as well if you are unsure of the projects parameters.
Unit 1- Adobe Illustrator
Unit 2- Type and Visual Hierarchies
Unit 3 Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop
What follows is a series of embedded links to each unit's respective Google Drive folder. This is another way to see the progression of projects or explore the curriculum.
This is a list of projects and their proposed completion time limits. Schedules are subject to change depending on snow days, and the pace of the class as a whole. There are more projects scheduled then there is time to complete them to allow for flexibility with students. For each project group there is a set of projects or one project. The student must pick one of the projects if there is a choice, if there is not a choice then they must do the only project available.
If the student does not finish within the time limit then they must finish it before moving on. Any time spent on the last project takes up time allowed for next project. Some projects take less time than what is allowed, and others may take longer. The skills in this class are like rungs on a ladder, if you don’t have the lower rungs you can’t climb higher.
Each project is linked to its respective Google Drive folder. Click on a Project Group name link to get to its folder. The links in the brackets labeled [video] are the video lectures and demonstrations for each project. You will watch these videos for a formal lecture about the assignment and its purpose. After each lecture there is often a demonstration of the technique or process you must follow to complete the assignment. If you wish to advance ahead of the class feel free to watch the next video and progress to the next project, please consult the teacher first before doing this though. Ask me if you have any questions about projects or criteria if the video was not clear enough. Also check the Edmodo assignment as I may use that to clear up issues or clarify the parameters for an assignment.
This course will get you acquainted with Adobe’s Illustrator and Photoshop software, the cornerstone of their Creative Suite. You will also learn how to create print media, digital photography, and mess around with a little bit of video.
If you’re thinking about becoming a graphic designer, web designer, digital photographer, or any of the vast array of career offerings in the commercial arts field, including continuing your education in the arts following high school, this is a great class to take.
It is a very rare opportunity to get this much experience with this software and you will be a step ahead of your college peers if you can take this class. I also consider it a good preparatory class to Ms. Cornelius’s Graphic Design class which is a CareerTech class. If this class is interesting to you in any way, take her class. It is longer, her equipment is better, and she has way more experience and know how than me.
This class is run almost entirely on Edmodo.com. We will go over how to use Edmodo and how the class will be run through Edmodo in class. You will receive assignments on Edmodo and hand them in on Edmodo but the actual folders containing the files, supplementary materials, and assignment criteria will be located on Google Drive. The Google Drive folders function as cloud storage for the material I will use in class.
This classroom website acts allows access to the folders and class materials as well. This website, Art with Turek, is kind of a blog I run. Generally I use it to post great student artwork and the occasional Art dept. news item or event.
The way I hope to run this class is to flip it. A flipped classroom is one where the students watch the lectures and demonstrations at home, then come to school prepared to complete the assignments with the teacher as a guide. Just imagine if instead of going home to complete some baffling math homework you had the teacher there helping you every step of the way. At home you could just sit and watch a short video of the concept the teacher was trying to teach you, no distractions, you could rewind it and pause it at will, or you could search online for other ways to learn the same concept. That’s kind of what I hope to do with this class. When you come to school, you should be ready to do the work, and you’ll one hundred percent of the time in class to complete with a teacher there to help you in case you get stuck.
I know that some students do not have access to the internet at home or at all times. If that’s the case I’m more than happy to accommodate you. Come in before, after, or during school hours whenever you are free to watch videos. Talk to me, I want our time spent in class to be productive, first and foremost.
For my Comp. Arts class, I want the class to run like a very efficient design studio. Students can either watch videos at home or at their computers in the lab at school to progress at their own pace. The entire class will be run online through Edmodo. Assignments will be completed and handed in digitally for the majority of the course. Students will learn new software but hopefully they will learn how to manage their digital workspace, manage time well, work digitally, search efficiently online, and make the most of the tools on and outside of their computers. The computer should become an extension of their creative selves, not a life-force or a crutch, it will become a tool. My ultimate goal is to have students understand the place of digital tools within a larger creative world and maybe consider the viability of Graphic Design and its related fields.
