Okay, I'm a terrible teacher, or I just wasn't very thorough, we actually won two gold keys and two silvers, with two honorable mentions. Our Scholastic awards shipped today, and I received the complete list of winners, on there to my surprise were a new gold key winner, Rachel Marks, and we also won some honorable mentions. Malia Spellman, a senior, won an honorable mention for her photograph "Ease Into Simplicity". Rachel Marks, a sophomore, won a gold key for her photograph "Light Photography 1" and an honorable mention for her photograph "Light Photography 2." Congratulations to all who entered, ladies I'm sorry I didn't look hard enough for your awards in your categories, I don't know how I missed them.
Tamea Clark, a junior, won a gold key for her drawing, "study of hair"; Westley Hattula, a sophomore, won a silver key for his drawing "Snow Beauty"; and Sophia McIlvanie, a sophomore, won a silver key for drawing "Hagia". All of the winners are shown below.
Congratulations to all of the winners, and if you entered but did not win, realize we have a massive pool of competition. In the mailed letter that comes with the awards they mention that there were over 3,000 art entries for our region, that's a lot. Just getting an honorable mention is a huge deal when you part of a select hundred or so that got recognized, that's close to a ten to thirty percent success rate depending on the size of the category and less than one percent success rate overall.
Take a look at the list of winners here. (Make sure you set the region to "Midwest region-at-large", category: Drawing and Illustration or Photography, and the Gold or Silver key or honorable mention to see the full list for that category) The list is massive, most schools only won a few awards each, it is very competitive and the bar for quality is very high. Selection is done by professional artists and curators currently working in their respective fields and can be pretty random from year to year. I think it's great that we won, if you see any of winners congratulate them, this is no small accomplishment! Check out the 2015 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for more information.
