This project, for whatever reason does not engender much creativity on the part of the students, even though I intend it to be this creative playground for the previously learned tools. While this years results were technically and craft wise, some of the best I've had, they were still derivative in that traditional high school sense. Which I guess doesn't really bother me as much as it should. Really, what I think it means is, I myself, really have to create steps or processes for truly being innovative and creative. I can't necessarily give it to them but I could force a more rigorous creative process on them. Something like draw an animal off a slip of paper in a hat at random, only work from photos, colors are drawn at random, oh and, here's the shape with which you must work with. My friend and colleague Ms. Cornelius, who teaches Graphic Design through a CareerTech program across the hall from me, does a similar process with different projects. It makes sense but I do have to commit to it. Here are just two of the best, the whole class did well though.
